This week marks National Adoption Week—something that holds a special place in my heart. 💙 Adoption has been a part of my life’s story for as long as I can remember. My mother and her sibling were both adopted as babies, and thanks to the openness of their adoptive parents, it was never a secret, but rather something embraced and celebrated. This openness shaped my mother’s confidence in discussing adoption with us as children, and it became part of our family identity. Adoption is often an emotional journey, filled with challenges for all involved. It’s a path that requires immense courage, love, and understanding. But it’s also a process that offers a second chance—both for children seeking a loving home and for individuals or couples looking to build their families. As a woman who has decided not to have children, adoption provides me with an opportunity to reconsider motherhood should I choose to in the future. For me, it represents more than just starting a family—it’s about giving children a second chance at experiencing love, growth, and success. To everyone touched by adoption—whether you’re an adoptee, an adoptive parent, or someone supporting the process—you have my deepest respect and support. 💛 #nationaladoptionweek #adoptionawareness #secondchances #familythroughadoption

Open adoption can be complicated. Watch the discussion as Kim (a birth mom,) Sharon (an adoptee,) and Sally (an adoptive parent shat with Brian De Vos ( an adoptive dad.) Hear how this dad and his family learned how to make it work over the years. Their child-centric approach took intention, commitment, good communication, and the acceptance of the mutual humanity of all involved! Sally Ankerfelt Sharon Obazee Susan David Kim Noeth Gayle H. 💡 A common misconception parents may have when choosing Adoption is the possibility of a Birth Mother reclaiming or taking back, their child. 🔹 This is a valid concern, and while it may be worrisome for hopeful Adoptive Families, it is important to recognize that this cannot happen once an Adoption is finalized and the Birth Mother's revocation period has ended. 🔹 Additionally, Adoption is a permanent legal agreement, and it is at the discretion of the Adoptive Parents to decide whether or not they would like to have an open, semi-open, or closed arrangement. 🔹 For more information regarding Adoption, including the Adoption services offered at Loftus-Vergari & Associates, please contact our office today. 💭 #LoftusVergariAndAssociates #LVA #Adoption #Myths #Misconceptions #Information #NEPA

To mark National Adoption Week and the new Governmnet’s tenure, I outline 6 steps to improve adoption in England, and we highlight examples of good practice. With thanks to Sarah Johal MBE and Satwinder Sandhu who as ever kindly and expertly helped me to think through the issues and actions. “We face a paradox: the need to recruit more diverse and committed adopters while acknowledging that the current system frequently fails to meet their needs. A fundamental issue is the disconnect between the adoption process and the ongoing support adoptive families and children require. The system often treats adoption as a final endpoint, neglecting the reality that children coming into adoption have complex histories and ongoing needs. This oversight leaves families ill-equipped to manage the lifetime challenges they face. If adoption is to remain a viable option, it must evolve to provide comprehensive support and recognise the nuanced needs of children who have experienced trauma and instability.”

Adoption can be a difficult process, and it doesn’t help that there are plenty of myths out there to confuse you. 😣 But fear not, we’re here to help – on social media (and in person if you need us!). Today, as part of our adoption myth series, we’re focusing on another common one: “Open adoptions always confuse the child.” This is wrong ❌ Open adoptions can help children with identity issues by giving them access to their biological parent(s). And ahead of the adoption, you can create an agreement noting boundaries and expectations. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing! Open adoptions aren’t for everyone, but they work well for many families. With that adoption myth busted, is there another one that gets under your skin? Share in the comments ⬇️ And while you’re at it, make sure you’re following us to see our final myth
