Calling all fellow "learn it all" enthusiasts! I am trying a new conference next week - #CUPA-HR. Venturing into unknown territory can evoke apprehension and trepidation. Instead, I am focusing on three #curiosity strategies that highlight the adventure and possibility in this opportunity for years to come. The CUPA-HR conference may be new for me, but human resources and management are not. During my doctoral program, I studied HRM (University of South Carolina Darla Moore School of Business), earned a cognate in it, and even focused my dissertation on organizational change. In my work, I use a people-first approach. At student affairs conferences, I often present on topics such learning organizations, transformative change, storytelling, assessment, staff development, etc. The focus of CUPA, on topics like workforce engagement, talent management, thriving cultures, ethos and practices for organizational excellence, and use of data as a strategic asset are just some of the topics that speak to me and light me up! The unknowns in this adventure, essentially lots to learn about the actual conference, are equally paired with excitement and anticipation. Maybe you’ve experienced similar feelings at some point about something new(ish) to you? Here’s what I’m thinking - my boundless curiosity approach: 1) Embrace a "learn it all" mindset. 2) Energize myself by meeting new colleagues (Fun fact: "Socializes a lot with others" was a frequent note on my childhood report cards! Area of strength!)! 3) Craft my list of collaborators and focus areas as I navigate the event. Choosing my mindset, remembering my energy, and building a take-away list should ensure not only a great experience but also a lasting impact in my work for years to come. This week has been a perfect blend of learning and sharing! I had the opportunity to attend two fantastic conferences: Palga Päev by Äripäev and Personaliuudised.ee and HR Expo with 700+ participants by Eesti HR Selts / Estonian HR Society, where I explored the latest trends and insights in the HR field. These events sparked my curiosity and gave me a fresh perspective on where the industry is headed. Some of the key topics that stood out for me were: - Estonian economy and job market trends - The benefits of brand ambassadors for companies - Motivation: is there more than money? - How to measure actual workload - Leadership grounded in values - The importance of involving people in strategic planning - Advanced AI tools for HR - Designing an effective recruitment process - Supporting people development through various tools On the flip side, I was honored to be invited by Jelena Solomina to share my knowledge today in a webinar on how to pass a successful interview, as part of her public speaking course. This experience reminded me of the importance of not only staying informed but also contributing by sharing what we know. A big thank you to Eesti HR Selts / Estonian HR Society and Äripäev for organizing such valuable events for HR professionals—they're definitely worth attending! I'm always happy to share my knowledge on topics like career development, motivation, growth, and the challenges we all face along the way. Sharing insights with others helps me learn from the audience and their questions, pushing me to improve even more. So, what’s more important—learning or sharing? I believe both are essential.
