"IMAX is just a bigger screen." The truth is, the IMAX movie format is much more. Because of their unique technological approach to not only their enormous screens, but also to their earth-shattering sound systems as well as their proprietary film cameras, IMAX has crafted the world's most immersive movie-going experience. Capturing footage on an IMAX camera is no small feat. The film is expensive and the cameras are noisy, so filmmakers need to meticulously plan how to properly use these cameras in their productions. The end result? They produce cinematic imagery that is unmatched by anyone else in the film industry. DID YOU KNOW? -Before digital projection became the industry standard, movie theaters most commonly utilized 35mm film. IMAX projectors display 70mm film. -IMAX large-format film displays an image so substantial, it is like watching a movie in 18k resolution. -Traditional movie theater film runs through the camera and projector vertically. IMAX film runs through horizontally. -IMAX cameras have filmed as deep as 12,000 feet under water (Titanica -1992), and as high as 250 miles above the earth (Space Station 3D - 2002). My key takeaways from #NAB2024: For those who don't know, NAB Show is the premier tech and gear conference for the film industry. Here's my list of notable trends from this year's event: 1) Anamorphic is not a trend. It's here to stay. From Blazar's extremely compact Cato 2x to Laowa's relatively affordable new S35 nanomorph line to Atlas coming out with an unbelievable 18mm 2x, there are more incredible visual tools to tell stories in anamorphic formats than ever before. Bring on the lens flares! 2) Tripod elitism is finally coming to an end. Smallrig and Tilta, both brands historically known for great products that undercut industry-standard prices have stepped into the cinema tripod scene. Tilta's CT12 and Smallrig's collaboration with Potato Jet promise to provide the same level of professional use for a fraction of the price of traditional counter-balanced tripods. The CT12 supports up to 26.5 lbs and is barely over $1k with carbon legs. Game changing. 3) Wireless video monitoring for the masses. The new Teradek Ace 750 should be a treasure on smaller commercial and doc sets. With a simple HDMI input/output, the option of client monitoring just opened up to a whole new market of cinematographers that don't have consistent access to kit with SDI ports (Sony FX3, Canon C70, Sony A7SIII, etc.) The unit itself is also small and light, giving more options for video monitoring on more cameras, in more environments. Atomos also gave us a look at the Ninja Phone, allowing any iphone to be used as an effective HDMI cinema monitor. Great flexibility for doc filmmakers who have to pack light. Also, social media creators can directly record off a cinema camera to their phone. My first thought: imagine an Instagram livestream in the dark with a Sony FX3 using the dual-base ISO! 4) Audio ecosystems are getting cleaner. New Deity products such as the PR2, S-Mic 3, and DXTX are built to work with each other for different purposes on set. Syncing and monitoring audio has never been easier for a solo-operator, especially when you need to use multiple lavs and booms on set at one time. Also, from a documentary perspective...A wireless boom?! Sign me up.

The immersive cinema format, 4DX, has achieved unprecedented success with its recent releases, Twisters and Deadpool & Wolverine, marking its two best weekends on record. This surge in popularity may inspire filmmakers to incorporate 4DX into their creative vision from the outset. The format's mainstream breakthrough came with Twisters, which generated $2.1 million in its domestic opening weekend, accounting for 15% of the total gross. This momentum continued with Deadpool & Wolverine, with 4DX contributing $2.5 million to its opening weekend box office, representing 6% of the total. Theater owners are capitalizing on this trend, expanding 4DX screenings to meet demand and preparing for upcoming releases like Alien: Romulus, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and Gladiator 2. Despite its international presence, with 727 screens worldwide, 4DX has significant room for growth in the US, where it currently operates only 64 screens. The format's parent company, CJ Group, plans to expand its US presence substantially. Industry stakeholders hope that 4DX will follow in the footsteps of IMAX, establishing a lasting presence in the market, rather than experiencing fleeting popularity like 3D. #Movies #4DX #PopCulture
