The Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance April 2024 Our Next Challenge: The Small Exotic Cat Crisis “Last year we celebrated passage of the Big Cat Public Safety Act, which ended the private ownership of big cats in the U.S. and put an end to their exploitation in cub handling attractions. While this was a major step forward for big cats, small wild cats lack similar protections. As a result, we are now facing a “small exotic cat crisis” involving servals, caracals, bobcats, and hybrids of these species. Contributing to the problem is social media, through such platforms as TikTok and Facebook, where more and more bobcats, servals, caracals, and hybrid cats are found. Breeders looking to make money, capitalize on this, promoting the cats as “friendly”, “domesticated”, and a great “pet.”” Complete Story; https://lnkd.in/gf2ayRJk Pictured, all 2023-2024 AZA accredited zoo ZAA accredited zoo Roadside zoo Private breeders #BCSA #captiveconservation #AZA #ZAA #roadsidezoo #TheConservationGameMovie

🚫 MYTH: I heard a huge pack of coyotes howling! ✅ FACT: Coyotes can sound larger in number through an auditory illusion called the ‘Beau Geste Effect.’ No, you’re not surrounded by dozens of coyotes (although that does sound pretty cool). Coyotes commonly live as individuals, in mated pairs, or in small family units. Their social structure simply is not set up to support a ‘huge pack,’ but they can make quite a bit of noise! What’s all the canid commotion about? Coyotes, sometimes known as song dogs, use various vocalizations for communication between family members, establishing territory, and attracting mates. Their howls, yips, and barks travel over long distances, making them effective communicators. In late summer or fall, it’s not unusual to hear small family groups howling together. Just a few coyotes can create the illusion of a much larger group through an auditory illusion called the ‘Beau Geste Effect.’ In a 2017 study on human perception of coyote group size, “subjects were asked to listen to recordings of one to four coyotes howling and “hip-yapping” and then guess the number of animals making the sounds. Regardless of background (urban, rural, suburban), subjects overestimated the number of coyotes by a factor of two.” - “Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law,” by Mary Roach. Coyote calls are generally not a cause for concern. We’re typically pretty scary to them, and they prefer that we keep our distance. If they feel we’re too close, especially if a dog is present, they might use alarm barks 🚨 to ask us to go away. In such cases, remain calm and leave the area, as they could be protecting a den and their families. If a coyote comes too close, you may humanely haze them by making yourself big and loud 📢. Additionally, practicing responsible pet ownership is essential to ensure the safety of both companion animals and wildlife 🐶🐱. #MythBusting #Coexistence #Coyotes #Wildlife #ProtectAmericasWildlife #ProjectCoyote 📹 Lisa Antell, #CaptureCoexistenceContributor

Ever wondered why dog training was invented? Let's bark back through time! 🕰️ Dog training isn't just about teaching tricks; it's a journey that dates back thousands of years, evolving alongside our dogs. Back in the day, early humans and dogs were like dynamic duos, working together on the daily grind. From hunting buddies to farmhands, dogs were trained for practical tasks like herding, guarding, and even lending a paw in agriculture. Imagine the hustle? But as human societies got fancier pants, so did our four-legged friends' roles! 🎩🐶 Dogs became more than work buddies; they became cherished family members. Ensuring good behavior became key, making dog training not just a skill but a necessity for harmonious household living. Fast forward to today, and dog training is an art form. It's about building trust, communication, and mutual understanding between humans and their canine pals. From ensuring safety to strengthening the bond between us, it's essential to being a responsible pet parent. So why do we train our pups? For all the things, of course! Dog training enhances dogs' lives & strengthens our bond. It's more than just tricks; it builds a partnership of love, trust, & respect. #DogTraining #PartnersInPaws #DogGoals #TrainDogs #DogLife #AGirlAndHerDog #DogThings #DogParenting #AlwaysLearning #GrowthMindset #Dogs #HumanDogBond

It's hard to find a person who does not like animals🐶🐈. According to the AAPA National Pet Owners Survey, 65 million households have dogs, and 46 million have cats. Those are the kinds of animals people want to have around. There are other animals, such as skunks🦨, snakes🐍, raccoons, possums, and ground squirrels🐿️, that most people don't like. These wild animals can reside under a house, deck, or void on the side of a driveway and cause problems.https://rpb.li/DqCu9i #crittersbewar #concretelifting #kansascityconcreterepair #concreteraising #drivewayrepair #sidewalkrepair #patiorepair #garagefloorrepair #sinkingconcrete

Keep an eye on your pets, especially when it's dark! The next 4-6 weeks is mating season for coyotes. Do not let your dogs out alone and don’t allow your outdoor cats to roam. Although #coyotes are prevalent in outlying and rural areas, they’re also thriving in suburban and urban areas, and smaller towns as well. Coyote breeding typically peaks in late February and early March, the gestation period averages 58 to 63 days. Male coyotes can become more aggressive during this time of year, the long and short of it all is that coyotes always pose a risk to your dog (and other small pets). That risk increases during mating season. Coyote caution tips: • Keep unattended cats and dogs indoors or in completely enclosed runs, especially at night, and do not assume that a fence will keep a coyote out of your backyard. • Accompany your leashed pet outside. If it is dark make sure you turn outside lights on to check your backyard for unexpected wildlife. • Leave noisemakers such as whistles and horns on hand to scare away coyotes that may enter your yard. • Yell, clap hands, blow a whistle and try to make yourself look larger if you have a close encounter with a coyote. #pestusa #wildlife
