World Giraffe Day - World Giraffe Day, celebrated annually on June 21st, aims to raise awareness about giraffe conservation and the challenges these majestic animals face, such as habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. The date, being the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, symbolises the tallest land mammal. Giraffe populations have declined by about 40% over the last three decades, leading to their classification as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with some subspecies critically endangered. To get involved, individuals can support organizations like the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF), spread awareness through social media, and participate in local or global events. It's Save The Elephant Day! According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, African Savannah and Asian Elephants are endangered, and African Forest Elephants are Critically Endangered. The World Wildlife Fund says only about 415,000 wild elephants are left in Africa, and only 40-50,000 wild elephants are left in Asia. So what can we do to help? 1. Only buy sustainable palm oil. Buying sustainably prevents the destruction of Asian Elephant habitat. 2. Promote conservation and prevent poaching by supporting elephant protection organizations like the Wildlife Conservation Society, National Park Rescue, and Save The Elephants. 3. Don't buy ivory! Twenty thousand elephants are murdered every year, and their tusks are sold illegally to make ivory baubles. 4. Don't ride elephants during your travels. Elephants are tortured so that they will allow humans on their backs. Plus, most elephants are taken from the wild and sold into this trade while their wild numbers are continuously dwindling. Their bodies aren't meant for riding, either, and many suffer lifelong injuries. In April 2016, Kenya's then-President Uhuru Kenyatta made a bold statement against #elephantpoaching by burning over 100 tons of ivory tusks—a powerful act symbolizing the nation's #commitment to #protecting these incredible animals. It is our responsibility to support efforts such as those by Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and African Wildlife Foundation in preserving elephant species and safeguarding their homes and ecosystems. Elephants are keystone species, shaping their environment in ways that benefit countless other species. From the iconic elephants of Kenya to the giraffes of Uganda, conservation efforts are vital for the survival of these majestic creatures and their ecosystems. Recent efforts, like the Elephant Relocation Project in Kenya, show the power of collaboration in wildlife conservation. In Uganda, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has relocated giraffes from Murchison Falls National Park to Pian Upe in Nakapiririt, Eastern Uganda, to restore and balance wildlife populations. These efforts, along with projects like the conservation of the Shoebill Stork at Mabamba Wetland and the protection of endangered species at Mpanga Forest, demonstrate the commitment to preserving East Africa's rich natural heritage.
