Some original thoughts from Lesley Gold about the importance of owning your story. 💪
Imagine someone takes your life story, turns it into a book, and then a blockbuster Academy Award-winning movie? You go to see that movie and on the screen is a version of yourself you don't even recognize. The popularized version of you becomes who people think you are. The life experiences that have shaped you are edited out, the best version of you is sidelined. That's what happened to Michael Oher, NFL Tackle and the centerpiece of The Blind Side. Michael Sokolove's NYT's piece sheds light on... how revered author Michael Lewis wasn't going to let facts stand in the way of a good story. Sokolove shows when, where and how Lewis misrepresented facts, details, and timelines that stood in the way of the story he wanted to tell. Why depict Oher as a star recruit and stand-out football player who was living with friends when depicting him as a poor, dumb kid with great athletic ability but no knowledge of football makes for a better story? There are those of us who believe truth in storytelling matters. Our stories shape who we are, how we perceive the world and how the world perceives us. Your story is uniquely your own. It is your identity. It is the heart and soul of who you are. Treat it with care, and entrust it with others carefully. In my line of work, we like to say if you don't control your story, someone else will. I hope Michael Oher can reclaim his story. Full story: https://lnkd.in/gaNKCKQy.

The Power of Transparency Transparency allows us to build trust and credibility, fostering deeper connections with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders. This became even clearer to me over the weekend while shopping for a new TV. After visiting several stores and speaking with different salespeople, it was obvious who was genuinely trying to help us make the best choice and who was just focused on closing a sale. In the end, we didn’t choose the cheapest option—we went back to the salesperson who was the most transparent. Their honesty made all the difference, and we felt confident in our decision. This experience was a reminder that authenticity and professionalism can coexist harmoniously, enriching both our work and relationships. Because in the end, we fool no one—only betray our own integrity. Let’s continue to embrace transparency thoughtfully, respecting its power to strengthen our professional endeavours while staying true to ourselves. An 80's rock band can teach you how to hire better people. First, go buy a bag of M&M's. Tear the corner of the bag off, pop that first one in your mouth, and take just a second to see what color it is. Now, throw the rest in the trash because they're terrible for you. We're using them as a way to filter out people who don't read application instructions and don't follow detailed directions. We have a thorough internal process to ensure we deliver quality work to our clients. This requires a team that can handle highly detailed work on a daily basis. When team members don't pay attention to details, it can result in subpar customer experiences or even broken websites that lose money. To make sure we hire people who are detail-oriented, we include specific, unusual instructions in our application and onboarding process. If applicants or new hires don't read or choose to ignore these instructions, it becomes evident in their applications and onboarding tasks. We took this idea from Van Halen. Yes, the 80's rock band taught us how to filter out people who don't pay attention to details. David Lee Roth, the band's lead singer, added a clause in their contracts stating that backstage snacks must not contain brown M&Ms. If they did, the promoter would forfeit all the proceeds from the show. The band's stage show had extensive lighting and electrical requirements. If these specs weren't followed closely, it could be dangerous for the band. The brown M&Ms served as a litmus test to see if the promoter had read the contract carefully. All they had to do was check if there was a bowl of M&Ms without any brown ones. If they found brown M&Ms, it meant there was a high risk of danger on stage. We once had an employee who kept missing details. On his Performance Improvement Plan, he wrote, "I am detai oriented." As you can guess, he wasn't with the company much longer. But. the lore of his PIP reply has been with us ever since.

Want to unleash the power of creativity in your company? Ban slides! Last week, we had our internal Lions conference. Our business units, functions and brands all tasked with sharing their ideas and plans with one brief: no slides and be creative. It was brilliant. Everyone got stuck in. Our Festivals, Intelligence and Advisory businesses had a pitch battle. My team (Advisory) made our pitch channelling our inner Avengers. Having to put our vision and proposition in a five minute pitch in the style of the Avengers was the perfect way to craft an engaging and punchy narrative. I’ll be using it in future pitches. So if you really do need to unleash creativity in your company, give me a shout and I’ll send in the Ascential Advisory Avengers! (The combined power of Lions, Contagious and WARC Advisory teams.) Special thanks to my co-super heros James Womersley and Ashik Ashokan
