None of our four offices fall into the path of totality, but Manifesters across the country are looking forward to today’s solar eclipse, and hoping the weather holds. If you want to learn more about why we’re so excited, and what a 400-degree baked potato has to do with it, read Manifest Editorial Director Didi Gluck's interview with renowned physicist and astronomer George Greenstein. The potato’s just the tip of the totality: https://lnkd.in/gpjqxbpc

What is it like during a total solar eclipse? How do we know EXACTLY when an eclipse will occur? And how excited should we be? Rochester astronomer Dan Watson answers questions about the phenomenon of eclipses for those in the “path of totality” on April 8. https://lnkd.in/e32TBG3Y

Mark your calendars! A breathtaking solar eclipse is set to grace our skies on April 8th. To get you excited about this event, we compiled a list of fun facts to read through. Did you know?🔭 🌟 Solar eclipses occur 2 to 5 times a year, but total eclipses in any given location are rare, happening just once every 360 years on average! 🌟 During the eclipse, areas in the path of totality will experience a few moments of daytime darkness, as if night has come early. 🌟 Solar eclipses have historically been important for scientific discoveries, including the validation of Einstein's theory of general relativity in 1919. 🌟 The temperature can drop by 10 degrees Fahrenheit or more during totality, giving a brief respite from the day’s heat. 🌟 Animals often get confused during solar eclipses; birds may stop singing, and some may head to their nests, thinking it's night. Remember to use proper eclipse glasses to safely enjoy the view. Will you be watching the event? Let us know in the comments!

I’m excited to share the news that two James Webb papers that I worked on last summer are now published! They are about Eris and Makemake, two dwarf planets out beyond Pluto. Our team discovered deuterated methane on their surfaces. We think this provides a clue to how these worlds evolved. There seems to be a hint that these cold bodies had (and possibly still have) warm interiors where carbon compounds could be processed into methane. A subsurface ocean is even a possibility. It’s incredible to be exploring the far reaches of the solar system with this telescope! Published and free versions of these papers linked below. https://lnkd.in/dURZx82u https://lnkd.in/dFC5ZVPZ https://lnkd.in/dUgGsZMS https://lnkd.in/dJvxfNGA
