Something is missing. Although the circuit will work for ideal sine wave, it will generate undesired pulses if the signal is noisy around the zero crossing points. It's recommended to use a schmidt triggered comarator, or to add simple L.P.F to supress input noise above 60 Hz. The voltage drop on the diodes will give some protection, but I wouldn't settle for that.
