After 3 consecutive 12 win seasons, the Dallas Cowboys are running it back with Mike McCarthy at Head Coach. McCarthy is a good and respect coach, but it’s the wrong decision unless he can cultivate an identity for the Cowboys. All the great Cowboys teams had an identity. You knew what to expect when they laced em up. The issue with the Cowboys under McCarthy is they don’t have an identity. Under Mike, and many before him, you expect one thing from the Cowboys. Failure in the playoffs. That has become their identity. A collection of great players with no calling card to lean on when things get tough is just a collection of great players. Finding the right identity is what turns that collection of great players into a team. If Mike can’t find that identity for this Cowboys team, Jerry will have to find a coach who can.

You think something wonderful is going to happen.” Joe DiMaggio I love opening day for MLB…every team undefeated and a few World Series parades already planned. And what a start yesterday…a 14 run third inning for the Diamondbacks, three home runs for the Blue Jays and a $237M payroll for the Dodgers, not counting the $915M in deferred money going forward! Of course it will go off the rails for most teams….it is a long season. Pretty good jump out of the gate in most of the markets we support and there is some good momentum and positive trajectory through March. More balanced I think, and we continue to see investment in new facilities in key markets, strategic acquisitions and hiring top talent to support the business. The challenge ahead for Q2 is to make sure you don’t get led into a cul-de-sac with few options and none of them good. Don’t be the guy born on third base and thinks he hit a triple.  Might take a reset like the Wifi…nothing major, just a reboot and away you go. A few navigational beacons:   ·       Deal with challenges as opportunities in real time, without drama. ·       Be curious. Really listen to what your customers have to say, fully understand their business. ·       Be responsive, solve problems, provide innovative solutions and care about their success. ·       Support the business internally and externally out of principle, not obligation. The rest is just chin music…high and inside. You will know you are in trouble when the drums stop and your customers will let you know about it.  

A class act to replicate in the business world. As a HUGE New England Patriots fan 🏈 , it was sad but expected to hear the announcement of Bill Belichick leaving after 24 years as coach of one of the most successful teams with 6 Super Bowl wins. 🏆 The partnership between owner, Bob Kraft, and Belichick has been strong, respectful, and always clear on the goals which was to win and "do your job". Unfortunately, the wins began to turn to losses in the last few years, and it became clear that Belichick was going to be fired any day. Instead of quietly and quickly releasing Belichick, Kraft and Belichick stood together yesterday and publicly announced their amicable separation and respect for each other. There was no bitterness. Kraft said Belichick gave him the wins he promised, and Belichick said he was grateful for the organization to allow him to run the team. Kraft was asked, Why move on? His response, "It's a results business". Layoffs or firings are never pretty and sometimes uncomfortable.
