Interviewing for a job but you have a pre-planned vacation or trip coming up? How do you handle this and when? You don’t want to start off your relationship with a potential employer on the wrong foot. You also don’t want to miss out on the job opportunity. Consider the following: 1. Transparency is Key When you're in the middle of interviewing for a new position, it's crucial to maintain open communication with potential employers. If you have a scheduled vacation, it's best to disclose this information as early as possible in the interview process. This demonstrates honesty and professionalism, allowing both parties to make informed decisions. 2. Timing Matters Ideally, mention your planned vacation during the initial stages of communication. Transparency fosters trust and shows your commitment to open communication. 3. Offer Solutions While informing employers about your vacation plans, also propose solutions to mitigate the impact of your absence, such as adjusting start dates, working remotely during the vacation period, or ensuring tasks are delegated appropriately in your absence. 4. Highlight Your Commitment Emphasize your dedication to the opportunity by assuring the employer that your vacation will not impact your commitment to the role. Reiterate your enthusiasm for the position and willingness to make up for any lost time. 5. Professionalism Maintain a professional demeanor throughout the conversation. Express gratitude for the opportunity and reassure the employer of your dedication to fulfilling your responsibilities. 6. Flexibility Remain flexible and accommodating to the employer's needs. While it's reasonable to request accommodation for your planned vacation, be prepared to negotiate and find mutually beneficial solutions. 5. Risks of Non-Disclosure Delaying disclosure of a scheduled vacation can create misunderstandings and potentially jeopardize your candidacy. Employers may view this as a withholding vital details or misrepresenting your availability. They can interpret a delay as a lack of transparency or commitment, raising doubts about your reliability and professionalism. --> Effective communication is key to building successful professional relationships. --> Your career journey should be marked by integrity and professionalism every step of the way. 6 things you can do over the holiday period? If you’re relaxing while all the managers and recruiters are on leave, great. There’s nothing wrong with taking time away from jobseeking – spending time with your family, doing things you like to do… But it’s clear from the number of enquiries I’m getting that there are plenty of people who would still like to focus on getting their first professional job in Australia or changing jobs for something better, even if everyone else is on leave. So, for those of you who do want to do something productive to do over this holiday period, here are a few things you can do to increase your chances of securing work in the new year. 1. Identify your target companies and their key managers whom you can approach directly with an expression of interest in mid-January. Use LinkedIn and Google to identify key personnel, but approach people via email. 2. Prepare what you are going to say – in writing and orally – to specific managers. Have an expert guide you on what you should be saying. This is your value proposition – how are you useful to a specific company? 3. Research your industry. Your conversation with prospective employers needs to be underpinned by your knowledge of your subject matter, trends, technology breakthroughs, current practice, regulations and the market and its players. Remember, it’s not all about you: it’s also about your value to an organization/company. 4. Reassess your LinkedIn profile. Does it depict you as the professional you want to be? Start contributing to posts, ask questions and make yourself known to people – networking is a ‘slow burn’; it will pay off in the long run. 5. Use ChatGPT as your career counselor. Keep posting questions to it and refine your prompts to get what you want from it. It’s not always useful, but it’s a great start to help you reflect on your job seeking practices or professional/industry knowledge. 6. Get advice on how you can submit higher quality applications. People do still get work by applying for jobs, but the quality of application required to land an interview has reached a new level. Identity what you need to do to secure interviews – speak to people in the company & your prospective manager to really understand the job and provide examples of what you have done that is relevant to the company. Or if this is not for you, chill out for the next couple of weeks. Each to their own. #OBPAustralia #JobSearch #Applications

Interviewer: Will you be available to work on weekends and days off if company requires? There will be times when you’ll be asked this question during an interview. It is obvious that you will be confused about what to say, but make sure you’re not saying this- “Of course I’m available whenever you need me!” “I prefer not to work on weekends or days off.” You don’t have to be direct with your thoughts, but answer strategically, because work-life balance is required. Here’s how you can answer this- “I understand the importance of meeting project deadlines and supporting the team when needed. While I’m generally available to work occasional weekends and days off, I also value work-life balance. If the situation requires it and with advance notice, I’m willing to adjust my schedule to accommodate the team’s needs if I don’t have any prior commitments with my friends or family.” This response shows your willingness to be flexible. And also emphasize the importance of work-life balance. So make sure to give this answer the next time you’re asked to work on weekends or holidays. That’s all!
