Mental Health Awareness Week 2024: Moving more for our mental health #empowerhalfhour
Research has shown that regular physical activity can make us happier and healthier. Our bodies release feel-good hormones when we're active, which can reduce anxiety and stress and help us sleep better. By building movement into our working day, we can have a positive impact on productivity and focus.
BUT exercising regularly is such a big commitment, right?!

Do you exercise?
As an adult, it can be hard to make time to exercise. I have no excuse not to exercise, but I still make plenty when I fall off the exercise wagon. Even when I suffer a sports injury, I can exercise around it if I choose. I can almost always walk. I have nature trails around the lake out the back door and a gym inside if the weather's not cooperating.
So, why do I fall off the exercise wagon? Why do I stop? It's simple. Exercise is something that's easy to do and easy not to do. I magnify the pain without considering the even greater gain.
One of the great benefits of exercise is it release endorphins. This is a powerful, natural, beneficial drug. We call it runner's high. Endorphins make you feel good. They make you optimistic. They seem to help your brain function better.
Not only does exercise make you feel better, look better, and make you healthier, it makes you function better. It doesn't take a lot. Start with 15 minutes a day. See what happens after a week.
One of my tricks is combining exercise with something else I enjoy. I read fiction on the elliptical and treadmill. It takes my mind off the exercise. A good movie or game on the TV can have the same effect.
Tracking activity and results can also help. A fitness tracker makes it real. A scale connected to the Internet gives a degree of accountability as long as you step on it. Scales don't lie. Even if poorly calibrated, they show progress.
Do you exercise? If not, try walking. Try one of the chair yoga apps. Try something. Try it for a week. Watch the video for more information.
Exercise and movement can be a vital part of a wellness routine, the benefits of which have been proven to be beneficial not only for physical health, but also for mental health. This can be true for people living with ALS as well.
