Nintendo’s first US commercial might be this 1980 ad Nintendo is a gaming juggernaut today, but it wasn’t really on anyone’s radar in the United States in 1980. And what was possibly the first US commercial for hardware produced by the company — a handheld called Toss-Up, from its “Game & Watch” series — certainly didn’t help, as a newly-restored copy shows. That’s because there’s no mention of Nintendo at all, or even Game & Watch. Game & Watch games were simplistic standalone handheld LCD games not unlike the cheap licensed Tiger Electronics games seemingly every kid had in the 1990s. And in the US, those games were initially licensed to a company called Mego (pronounced “mee-go”), and sold as a series called “Time-Out” instead, according to The Video Game History Foundation in a blog... New Cartridge Releases Are Taking Retro Gaming to Another Level It may be a stretch to call it a resurgence, or a comeback, but video game cartridges are having a bit of a moment. There are new consoles designed to play old cartridges, new carts being made for old consoles, and new approaches to the cartridge format that are opening up new possibilities. Reviving a Fading Format For decades, cartridges were synonymous with video games. They were first introduced in the mid-1970s with the Fairchild Channel F console and were one of the key reasons the Atari 2600 became wildly popular, kick-starting the home video game console market as we know it today. The video game crash of 1983 dealt a setback, but they’d soon return and became more popular than ever thanks to the likes of Nintendo and Sega, and they’d remain ever-present until the mid-1990s when discs began to take over. https://lnkd.in/g2rkVArq #RetroGaming

The #SteamDeck really took me by a surprise. I wasn't quite sold on the idea of a gaming handheld, so I purchased one out of curiosity. Fast-forward a couple of months, and it is now my most-used gaming console. There's a lot to like about the device, in particular, the OLED model, which offers better battery life and a 90Hz display. More importantly, it has a LOT of games that run surprisingly well, too.
