#Semiconductor #manufacturing firm Wolfspeed is closing a chip facility in Durham, North Carolina. The decision was partially prompted by a temporary capacity reduction spurred by an equipment facility issue at the plant. Despite the closure, the chip maker still has plans to expand its other manufacturing facility in Durham. https://lnkd.in/gBAWYYRq

The Department of Commerce has announced a preliminary agreement to provide up to $750 million in funding to Wolfspeed, Inc., under the CHIPS and Science Act, supporting the construction of a cutting-edge silicon carbide wafer manufacturing facility in North Carolina. This investment, part of Wolfspeed’s broader $6 billion initiative, is set to create 5,000 jobs across North Carolina and New York and bolster the U.S. semiconductor supply chain, a critical move as the nation seeks to advance technologies like AI, electric vehicles, and clean energy. The CHIPS Act, signed by President Biden in 2022, dedicates $52 billion to revitalizing semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S., reinforcing economic and national security. Wolfspeed’s new facility, the John Palmour Manufacturing Center, will be the largest silicon carbide wafer production plant in the U.S. and the world’s first to mass-produce 200mm silicon carbide wafers, supporting advancements in energy-efficient, durable semiconductors. This facility, along with the expansion of Wolfspeed’s manufacturing site in New York, positions the company as a global leader in next-generation semiconductor technologies, powering industries from electric vehicles to national security. These projects will significantly increase Wolfspeed’s output, highlighting the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to strengthening U.S. manufacturing and technological leadership. #semiconductors #chips #manufacturing #cleantechnology #artificialintelligence #usinnovation #siliconcarbide #economicgrowth #supplychain #technologyexpansion Source- https://lnkd.in/eTZFaN88

It is refreshing to see that there is a heightened sense of awareness among the political leadership in Washington DC about the importance of the domestic manufacturing of printed circuit boards. Investing in domestic semiconductor manufacturing is incredibly important, but we cannot forget that all these chips need to be mounted to a circuit board to do their jobs. We have lost a tremendous amount of PCB production capacity in the US over the past decades. It is critical to build a strong and resilient domestic infrastructure for microelectronics manufacturing - and that includes advanced printed circuit boards. #PCBAA #printedcircuitboards #chipsact
