I have just completed Fidelity International's Investment Management job simulation with Forage. This provided a great opportunity to gain insight into what a role in investment management would involve. As part of the simulation, I: ⭐ Addressed a client's questions on investment management, allowing me to develop my understanding on the key fundamentals ⭐ Optimised a managed investment portfolio by analysing the Europe Focus Fund’s performance, then drafted an email providing suggestions for improvement ⭐ Evaluated publicly listed stocks for a potential investment through completing a SWOT analysis based on annual reports, articles and an investor presentation ⭐ Used a range of methods to analyse fixed income investments, which involved evaluating the financial metrics of six companies, reviewing a relative valuation analysis of Tesla bonds and providing a recommendation to buy, sell, or hold these bonds ⭐ Created an optimised multi-asset portfolio, using the Sharpe Ratio and Excel's Solver function to calculate the optimal portfolio weightings ⭐ Identified key market observations on current digital trends to devise ideas for the Sales and Marketing team #fidelityinternational #fidelity #forage #investmentbanking #financeskills #careerdevelopment #industrialplacement

This was a great morning read and made for a great way to wake up. ☀️ I didn’t realize how tough the investment advisor / manager business is. When I think about imany of peers, none of them use an advisor or manager. They use ETFs and DCA into them, either in their 401(k) or in their IRA. Money goes into the funds like coins going into piggy banks. How do investment professionals compete against that? I use ETFs in my 401(k) too. My contributions go into the program’s S&P 500 fund. For everything else, I pick stocks. It’s an intellectual game with a creative outlet that tickles my mind and soul like nothing else. I started out knowing nothing except for the experiences of living through the dot-com bubble and the GFC. Those experiences and all the wonderful information available in books, YouTube videos, online courses, blogs, etc have been my advisors and managers in a sense. I really threw myself into this pursuit and made it “my job”. Not everyone can do that. I also got super lucky. Not only do I have the time, opportunity, and resources to engage in the art of investing but I also have an extremely supportive family and network of friends. They remind me what the game is really all about. Them. ❤️ Their future.🌲
There were moments during my recent job search and listening tour of the investment management industry when I was unsure if I was going to get another chance to be an equity portfolio manager or co-PM. I am in my early 40s, which used to be the prime of many investors' careers. But the shrinking number of public equity seats available--and the general difficulty of differentiating one firm or strategy from another--forced me to consider other roles where I could employ the skillset I learned working in public markets for 15 years. With all of that in mind, I feel lucky to have gotten another chance in public equities, just with a little private equity twist this time. I am learning a lot and, most importantly, am having fun again. But as I am embark on this new adventure, I am trying to be as self-reflective as possible, with the goal of trying to avoid past investment mistakes. In my latest Substack piece, I reflect on what I have learned about investing, the investment management industry, and what it takes to be truly different: https://lnkd.in/gSztmRqA
