The hole needs to be the right size - not too tight, which can complicate installation, and not too big, which may require excess backfill. Due to a significant portion of the structure being located in the marine deposit zone (Buried Zone), immersed zone, tidal zone, and splash zone, metal piers are exposed to corrosion in the marine environment. In cathodic protection of metal jetties, anodes are installed at various submerged points of the jetty (such as piles) to protect the structure. Anodes used in the sacrificial anode method are of the flush-mounted type and are connected to the structure via a base using welding or bolts.
