New Post: UNHCR report — Global Issues - https://lnkd.in/gr6EAWZj According to the report, Safe Pathways for Refugees – released on Monday – nearly 215,000 permits were granted to individuals displaced by conflict and crises by 37 OECD countries and Brazil in 2022, an increase of about 38 per cent over 2021.Approximately 156,000 permits were issued that year, while the figure in 2020 was about 127,000.The report focused on entry permits provided to individuals from Afghanistan, Eritrea, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Syria, and Venezuela by OECD countries and Brazil.Overall, Europe accounted for 56 per cent of all permits, with the Americas providing 39 per cent. Germany and Canada provided the largest numbers of work, study and family reunification entry permits to refugees from the seven nationalities covered.Family reunificationNotably, family reunification permits constituted over 50 per cent of all permits issued in 2022, with work and study permits also showing a steady increase.Ruven Menikdiwela, UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for Protection, highlighted the significance of these complementary admissions in the context of rising global displacement.“With most of the world’s refugees hosted in developing regions, these forms of complementary admissions to third countries can help better protect them, provide them with opportunities to contribute to their new communities, and ease pressures on over-stretched host countries.”She also emphasized the importance of the family reunification permits, stating that alongside being a human right, it was encouraging to see that family reunification remains the most relied upon third-country solution.Safe and legal pathwaysThe senior UNHCR official also commended the efforts of governments and partners to ensure refugees’ access to safe and lawful pathways, in alignment with the agency’s Roadmap 2030.The roadmap envisions expanding third-country solutions to reach 2.1 million complementary admissions by 2030, with 35 per cent of this target achieved through progress made in 2022.It also underscored the importance of improving data collection to inform policy decisions and enhance refugee inclusion in regular migration streams. It urged sustained collaborative efforts among states and stakeholders to ensure refugees have access to safe and sustainable pathways towards rebuilding their lives. #UNHCR #report #Global #Issues

I pleased to share our new Regional Policy Brief - Promoting Refugee Integration and Inclusion: Empowering Municipalities Across Europe. More municipalities across Europe than ever are hosting refugees. In a new brief, UNHCR brings together fresh insights and workable solutions on areas of pressing concern to municipal actors: Funding, Affordable Housing, Multistakeholder coordination on holistic integration responses and policies, effective population distribution, boosting the attractiveness of declining municipalities, and enhancing data on integration on inclusion. The brief includes a synthesis of expert knowledge and policy advise, guidance, tools and new promising practices on these areas from countries throughout Europe. While municipalities remain at the forefront of the refugee response, this brief outlines the essential role stakeholders across multiple sectors must play – as enablers, investors, and innovators – to enhance refugees’ access to rights and opportunities and maximize their potential to contribute to the future prosperity of towns and cities of Europe. When I started at HIAS five years ago, there were just shy of 80 million forcibly displaced people. Now it's 120 million. According to the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, one in 69 people globally — or 1.5% of the entire world’s population — was forcibly displaced in 2023. The impacts are felt on every continent, not just those who are displaced themselves, but also the communities welcoming them. “While we celebrate the resilience of people who are refugees on #WorldRefugeeDay, recognizing their talents and human potential, the jump from 110 to 120 million is nothing to celebrate. If displaced persons cannot safely and voluntarily return home, the international community needs to work harder to make sure they have a place to call home, so they are refugees no more. That work starts with each one of us, welcoming the refugees and asylum seekers who live in our own communities.” - HIAS President & CEO Mark Hetfield "HIAS’ protection efforts will continue to emphasize the rights of all forcibly displaced people. We also recognize the centrality of the local voices and the needs of the host communities, as well as climate change’s disproportionate impact on displaced populations, in our program design and operations.” - HIAS Chief Programs Officer Raphael Marcus Though World Refugee Day is officially June 20, every day is World Refugee Day for the equivalent of California, New York, Texas, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and New Jersey's combined populations. We have our work cut out for us. #refugeeswelcome #refugeesupport #displacedpeople #statelesspeople #asylumseekers #asylum #immigration #refugees #humanitarianaid #humanitarianism

Israel’s occupation of Palestine has forced thousands of Palestinians to flee the country in search of safety and security. Unfortunately, displaced Palestinians in Egypt lack refugee status. As a result, they are ineligible for most international aid meant for refugees. Recognizing the gap in refugee services, civil society in Egypt takes action. Among these efforts is the Sanad Initiative. How does this initiative help bridge the gap in service access for Palestinian refugees in Egypt? Today is #worldrefugeeday and time to reflect again - how can we support refugees more? How can we be part of the solution for better refugee inclusion? How can we change the way we talk about refugees, to be part of changing the narrative to a more positive and supportive one that allows for opening up to the endless opportunities we get if we include people and not exclude? #withrefugees #unhcr #togetherforallrefugees
According to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, in 2023, forced displacement reached an all-time high with almost 120 million people forced to flee their homes. That means 1 in 69 people on the planet were displaced to other parts of their own country, or across an international border leaving everything behind. Behind these statistics are countless, untold, human stories of suffering, of families torn apart and livelihoods lost. At IKEA we believe in the power of inclusion and the strength of community. We remain deeply committed to removing negative misperceptions and changing the narrative around refugees by showing the immense value they bring to their new communities. By providing language and work-ready skills, we aim to support social and economic inclusion. On #WorldRefugeeDay, I invite you to watch the video and hear the stories. So that together we can create a better future for everyone. #BetterTogether #WorldRefugeeDay #WithRefugees #RefugeeDay

Discussions on the #decolonization of the aid sector or refugee regime and making the responses and programming better informed and led by refugees have not been easy. #RLOs and #refugees have found themselves on the receiving end, having to prove their value in the refugee regime response. On the contrary, while donors and the "big brothers of the system" have been slow in facilitating genuine acceleration of the localization agenda, the communities that refugees and RLOs serve value them, feel their impact, and are often confronted with high expectations to deliver greater impact with less funding and facilitation. In the latest episode of "What's Unsaid Podcast" by The New Humanitarian, hosted by Obi Anyadike, I argue for the need to "let refugees lead" and to facilitate "enough seats at the table for refugees," which is the exact blueprint that Refugees SEAT is advancing. I know some of the content in the podcast will make some of us uncomfortable, but that's exactly what we need to move the needle in enhancing efficiency in supporting refugees and local actors. #share #comment #refugeesleading #decolonization

Communications for Global Education and Development | MEd student at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto
For anyone concerned about the growing flow of displaced people globally, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency's #GlobalTrends report is a must read. It explains the changes in migration among internally displaced people and refugees, and people in refugee-like situations (though this term needs more clarity) and the data used to compile these numbers. The bottom line is that the numbers are rising: there are 43 million refugees and 68 million IDPs - numbers that are, quite frankly, hard to fathom. Each is an individual with their own stories - both tragedies and dreams for the future. Forty per cent of displaced people are children (they are disproportionately represented as children make up 30% of the world population). These kids are also less likely to be in school and educating them is complicated by national policies of host countries. This isn't going to end any time soon if the trends are anything to go by ... https://lnkd.in/gCrQi4Fj #migration #refugees #education #displacement #IDPs USA for UNHCR UNHCR Canada
