Reconciliation Week
Now More Than Ever
Subi East
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
We’re posting a project each day, celebrating collaborations with Noongar artists and Elders to share Noongar stories, their way.
Celebrating Noongar katidjin (knowledge) on Noongar boodjar (country), DevelopmentWA’s Subi East Six Seasons Bidi Trail was delivered under the guidance of Karrda and the Whadjuk Elder Reference Group.
The Bidi Trail celebrates the Noongar seasons, winding through Subi East, connecting people to culture, katidjin (knowledge) and boodja (land).
This project is an embodiment of DevelopmentWA’s commitment to working with Aboriginal people and communities towards a reconciled Western Australia.
“The thinking is to deliver amazing artworks that tells the story of the six seasons, while developing the skills of the artists involved so they are able to continue their career, adding public art to their professional toolkit” says Helen Curtis, Director at Apparatus. “We’re working towards a city, a country where First Nations stories and artworks, by First Nations artists, are evident in our public spaces.”
The artworks are impressive, evocative and powerful and every one of the six artists has gone on to new artwork projects.
We’re so proud that the Bidi is a place the whole community can connect closely to Noongar katidjin.
