𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁 𝗜𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝗷𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗣𝗡𝗚 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝗮 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝟭𝟭 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟲 (𝘗𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘵: 𝘜𝘗𝘕𝘎 𝘚𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴 Hercules Jim, Livai Kuaken, Steward Thoke, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 Arthur Amos 𝘪𝘯 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘵 𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘵.) I am not sure if the general public has realized by now the sacrifices it takes to take up a voice and speak against politics and leadership in this Nation. The feat is extremely difficult because of the neo-cargo-cult complex that has been built and nurtured around Melanesian leadership and politics. The people deify political leaders and prop them up on pedestals akin to a messiah. There is a deep spiritual element that undergirds how people hold their leaders in awe and reverence in Melanesia. This is further compounded by greed and selfishness, where cronies uphold and enforce the status quo so that they remain at the table to have access to Waigani's power and money coffers. The "kaikaimahn" is more resourceful and vengeful than you can imagine! This is different from the West where leaders are seen as fallible and vulnerable to corruption and vice. Where the law looms over the actions of leaders and their cronies. In 2016 when students from UPNG [and other tertiary institutions] took up the mantle of the voice of the silent majority, the incumbent Prime Minister at that time was worshipped by those who loved him, revered by those who understood his intelligence and judgement, and feared by those who were manacled to his service through the civil bureaucracy and procured their appointments by political affiliation. The complex of O'Neil's leadership was magnanimous and terrible. The breadth of the man and his ruthlessness were venerated. When you are nothing but only burn with the fires of idealism, it takes a lot of courage and character to face that impossible, to step into the shadow and that fear, to call out the darkness and corruption of leadership. We conducted the longest, united, organized, and well-meaning protest against the O'Neil Government for more than 7 months. We exercised the power of the SRC and the UPNG Forum Square to heights it had never been before. At the end, 32 of us we were terminated and blacklisted from every tertiary institution in Papua New Guinea, let alone UPNG! On Tuesday, 11 October 2016, at ex-parte hearing, her Honor the late Justice Leka Nablu and the National Court reinstated our student status and returned us to classes at UPNG per injunctions. On the following Thursday, 13 October 2016, the inter-parte came before his Honor Justice Collin Makail who reaffirmed the Courts decision the previous Tuesday. On Friday, 14 October 2016, after uplifting sealed orders from the Court Registry, we marched back into UPNG victorious! God honored our sacrifice! We took student leadership and power to the uttermost!

BCMA Regional Workshop: Candid Actionable Reconciliation Education (CARE) Well-intentioned actions can cause harm, and museums’ attempts to act in supporting truth and reconciliation are overwhelming many Indigenous communities. Settlers and non-Indigenous organizations must take steps to redress centuries of injustice without relying on Indigenous communities and knowledge holders to be the sole drivers of change. The BCMA has provided CARE Resources online, including a Relationship Building Workbook. While organizations may be rushing to create relationships that will help move reconciliation work forward, they must take the time to learn, question, and reflect on their own practices and histories, instead of expecting Indigenous communities to reflect for them. The goal of the workbook and associated resources is to avoid the inequality in labor, both physical and emotional that stems from these interactions. Join Leia and Lorenda for this regional workshop to unpack the Relationship Building Workbook, self-reflect, and lay a foundation for better relationships with Indigenous communities and partners. Registration fee is $50.00. To register, visit: https://lnkd.in/g5qGtKre #BCMA #BCMuseums #BCCulture #Reconciliation #RelationshipBuilding #Workshop #ProfessionalDevelopment

As most of you will have noticed, I’m not very proactive on most social media platforms, never mind LinkedIn. The recent riots have had a profound impact, both professionally and personally. I’ll focus on the former and ask if you can please share message below, especially with your creative and cultural sector contacts and networks. In the last few weeks, England has grappled with a significant rise in far-right extremism, racist violence, anti-immigration feeling, and Islamophobic attacks. Subsequently, a number of meetings have taken place, both in Middlesbrough and in Bradford to discuss the impact of these riots. Whilst some have attempted to attribute the riots to the horrific murder of three children, it is evident that these events have threatened the very fabric of our diverse society and now demand an urgent, robust, and thoughtful response from all sectors, particularly the arts and culture community. In response to significant demand, we have organised Beyond Hate - a series of three opportunities for artists, and the arts and culture sector to capture experiences, ideas and culture led solutions to the rising hate in our communities. The evidence and ideas gathered at these events will be shared with cultural leaders, funders, and institutions across the cultural sector. The events are scheduled for 5th, 6th, and 9th September. Further details and registration instructions can be found at https://lnkd.in/eufbMzA5 Please share as appropriate, we hope you will be able to join us and contribute to these important conversations as we continue to support our communities to recover and heal.

A Heartfelt Salute to #NationalIndigenousPeoplesDay On this special day, I’m embracing an Indigenous tradition of sharing knowledge. A wise First Nation community member once told me, “If you have knowledge, you share it.” As someone privileged to work with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples, I’m eager to pass on what I’ve learned about our collective journey towards Reconciliation, especially in the context of the #TruthandReconciliationCommission #CalltoAction92. Learning from a True Leader The Honourable Murray Sinclair, Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, recently shared some insights. He emphasized that corporate leaders need to understand their role in the history and the damage done to Indigenous cultures, resources, and properties. This understanding is crucial for shaping the direction of Reconciliation from Corporate Canada. A Call for Change in Corporate Culture Sinclair’s message is clear: Corporate Canada’s responsibility extends beyond contracts and employment. It’s about a fundamental shift in our corporate culture - how we think, how we do business, and how we talk about each other and Indigenous resources. The Journey of Reconciliation In Sinclair’s inspiring words, “Reconciliation is a constant effort.” I’m committed to this journey, ready to learn, unlearn, and share my learning. Join the Conversation. Tracie is an inspiration. Her message is spot-on, and recognition is well-deserved.
Want to be inspired? Listen to this speech by Tracie Powell, the founder and CEO of The Pivot Fund, at the 2024 Sheroes in Media Awards. Powell, along with nine other women, was honored by the Multicultural Media Correspondents Association for their contributions to the field and evoked the power of BIPOC ownership. "I knew in my core that, and I still feel this way, information is power, and that when you fund people of color, Black, Latine, Asian-American, Indigenous, and immigrant people who are at the forefront of serving their communities, when you fund those organizations, those communities are better informed. And when those people are better informed, our world is better and so that's the work that we are doing at The Pivot Fund. We fund organizations led by and for people of color who are not on anybody's radar."

The Alberta NDP Constitution states clearly that they are socialists with a socialist agenda. It tells us right up front they have one singular purpose. 1.03 The purpose of the party is to promote the principles of democratic socialism in Alberta and to establish and maintain a democratic socialist government in Alberta through the electoral process.
