So I had the absolute pleasure of attending the National Math and Science Initiative “MATH FOR ALL: Strategies for Inclusive Instruction and Student Success” Education Week webinar earlier today, moderated by NMSI VP of Public Affairs, Nichole Austion, MBA. To include guest speakers: Executive Director of the National Association of Mathematics - Dr. Aris Winger & NMSI Director of Programs & Design Innovation - David Celotto. Foremost, thank you all for taking the time, the wisdom imparted and the brilliant work you’re doing to foster best educational practices, globally. I’m honestly still so fired up from this call, that I moseyed on over here to share my biggest takeaways to help amplify the importance of equitable education for all. 1) Implementing the “psychologically safe” framework of Dr. Timothy Clark. Posing the question to educators if their students are comfortable (or feel safe) enough in their classroom to question, contribute and challenge the learning material. 2) Dr. Winger emphasized how math is an inherent part of the human experience and is present in all bodies of knowledge. Albeit - history, calculus, street math, data science, etc. Math is everywhere! And it’s important to foster a more inclusive, problem-solving space, where math is reflective of real-world experiences to better engage & relate to students (Food Desert Example, Dave Celotto). Especially those in marginalized communities. 3) A student that hates math, is more than likely someone who’s hurting from a previous, or otherwise traumatizing experience. Get to you know your students at their core identity! 4) “Equity is simply asking, ‘who am I leaving out?’” - Dr. Winger Last but not least, leading with humility. It’s crucial to make the intentional effort of really getting to know your students so that they feel seen, heard, and safe to share. Taking the time to build & nurture that rapport, will ultimately lead to students wanting to learn more. In summation, today’s panel discussion surrounding math inclusion was powerful & riveting. I certainly look forward to attending comparable events such as this! Fun Fact: as a full-time D1 student athlete, I participated in my respective schools’ Work Study programs as both a Math & English tutor. One of the mentees that I tutored my Freshman year in College Algebra, unexpectedly gifted me the first two PlayStation games of Uncharted (I was playing Uncharted 3 religiously at the time) as a heartfelt thank you at the EOY. Paystubs & gifts aside - I’ve always found joy in seeing people succeed. I want to see everyone WIN! Being apart of a positive life experience is rewarding in and of itself, and I’m grateful for every opportunity to make an impact. #NMSI #ClassDojo #EdTech #SaaS #EquitableEducationForAll #ImpactDriven
