Most rescues think adopters are proactive about reading every email and putting their advice into practice, but that could hurt the dogs you are trying to save. Many times, the reality is that these well-intentioned adopters are overwhelmed with information and may miss crucial steps in the process.      But we get it. Everyone says that the more you give your adopters on the front end, the less likely they are to bring back the dog they adopted from you. This belief is widespread and perpetuated by many within the rescue community. So it is easy to believe.       But if that were true, every home would be a forever home, and we know that's not the case. The reality is far more complex, and many variables come into play regarding successful adoptions.     But how can adopters take the dog's decompression and training seriously? Not too long ago, I started volunteering at a Portuguese dog shelter. The place does amazing work to help rescue dogs stay healthy and social before they can find a home. I go there on the weekends to walk a few dogs and socialise with them. I give them a few hours of my day. With the help of me and the other volunteers, all 80 dogs get walked on the weekend, even twice if enough people show up. However, they only get walked on the weekends and on Wednesdays because those are the days they can get enough volunteers to come in. It breaks my heart that the dogs can’t get a proper walk every day. It also pains me to know that some of them will spend the rest of their lives at the shelter. And when I start to think about how many dog shelters there are in the world and how unnecessary it is that people buy dogs from breeders when there are so many rescue dogs looking for a home, frustration and hopelessness take over me. My little effort of dog walking on the weekends seems too small, too insignificant in the big picture. This is where I need to stop and narrow my gaze. I need to bring myself back into the present moment and the world I can see and feel around me. I need to shift my focus to the actions I can take. It’s in this present moment where my hope resides. It’s in this present moment where I need to stay to be connected to that hope. Worldly thinking is not helpful, it’s counterproductive. My actions alone won’t change the bigger picture but my actions combined with the actions of others, who also keep themselves motivated by the present moment, can result in something impactful. I firmly believe that problems caused by human action can also be cured by human action. And problems caused by masses of people will also need masses of people to solve them. I can’t do it all on my own. But I can be one of those people. Staying present is key. Staying focused on the real world around us instead of the news and the internet is key. Two days ago, while walking through a remote road in the jungle, we noticed a dog standing under a tree, looking lost and confused. Concerned, we asked a person nearby about the dog. He told us that just a while ago, a car had driven up to this spot. The driver opened the door, let the dog out, and then sped away, leaving the helpless animal behind. The dog stayed there, unsure of what to do, hoping its owner would come back. But the person knew, just like we did, that the dog had been abandoned, left to fend for itself in an environment it had never known. This isn’t an isolated incident. It happens to countless animals, and it’s a result of impulsive decisions and lack of commitment from people who once promised to care for these innocent lives. Pets are not objects to be discarded when they become inconvenient. If you bring a pet into your life, you are making a promise—to care, to love, and to provide for them. Abandoning them, especially in places where they can’t survive, is not just cruel; it’s a violation of that promise. Before adopting a pet, be sure you can give them the care, attention, and time they need. If you can’t make that commitment, it’s better not to adopt. Let’s spread the message loud and clear: "If you can't take responsibility, don't abandon. Banfield Foundation is back from a weekend on Najavo Nation in Lechee, Arizona and the message is clear: spay and neuter saves lives! 🧡🐕🐈 In communities where spay/neuter is not accessible, we end up with an overpopulation of dogs that can’t be cared for — many get hit by cars, become sick or injured, go without food or shelter and in most cases, become pregnant and the cycle begins again… This is why we are increasingly committed to bringing comprehensive preventive care to Tribal lands and under-resourced communities. The struggle is real (as is the cuteness) — but it doesn’t have to be! #spayandneuter Upon arrival in one neighborhood, this (adorable) mama and her four puppies were found running the streets — all are now spayed/neutered + all four puppies were relinquished; two are looking for new homes. Visit another neighborhood, you’ll find the same situation. In just two days, our team worked with our partners at The Parker Project to spay and neuter 180 animals — we also provided wellness/sick care for 230 pets and provided food, shelter and extended tie-outs for dozens of deserving dogs and cats. + we funded it all! ➡️ Three days on Navajo Nation, three takeaways: 1.
