Today Southwestern Energy engineers awake to find themselves part of a different organization. If you are at SWN, it's time to start planning for your future. Don't be lulled into the mindset just waiting to see what happens. Here is one simple thing you can do in less than an hour which will help you anticipate what culture changes are coming. The leaders of any organization set the priorities as well as the tone and culture of the company. The social and charitable activities a company spends dollars on as well as donations of their employees time says a lot about what the leaders care about outside of the office. Download the last two annual reports from each company. For each company, look through each report and note the activities they promote as well as the positive impact they are highlighting to investors. Make sure to highlight statements or activities in the SWN report that resonate with you - things that you agree strongly with. Look over the two lists. Compare what each company emphasizes by answering the following questions: 1. Are there differences in how much of the report text is focused on community impact, environmental stewardship, or employee involvement? There is limited time to prepare the reports and limited investor attention span. The focus is not the numbers, but the space that each company feels is important to devote. 2. Are there parts of the report that highlight very similar accomplishments? This could indicate leadership and direction which emphasizes incremental changes over bold investment in new directions. 3. What is the larger context each company frames their activities around? Oil and Gas is a global industry, even for domestic producers. How much space in the report is focused on the larger context? If there is a significant difference, it could indicate one leadership team is better prepared for the future. Mergers take time. Starting today, pay extra attention to what SWN leaders are communicating. What messages fall to the wayside? What new messages start replacing them? This indicates changes in the priorities and unspoken or unofficial policies. Pay close attention to shifts in leadership. Any changes are important to note, as most leaders are incentivized to stay.
“This powerful combination redefines the natural gas producer, forming the first U.S. based independent that can truly compete on an international scale. We will be positioned to deliver more natural gas at a lower cost, accelerating America’s energy reach and fueling a more affordable, reliable and lower carbon future,” said CEO Nick Dell’Osso regarding today’s announcement that Chesapeake has entered into an agreement to merge with Southwestern Energy.
