We also need to break down the barrier to funding for building/software/data driven building sector non profits, where success is driven by increased adoption and impact, not increased profit margins, but investment is still needed to scale. At Building Transparency, we are seeing our EPD database and free EC3 tool becoming the foundation that a collection of innovative tech startups - as well as some seasoned tech companies - (Tangible, cove.tool, Qualis Flow (Qflow), 2050 Materials, C.Scale, Autodesk, Bentley Systems) are building on top of (EPD database) and/or integrating with (EC3 tool). This is a necessary role for a non profit to fill (re: to data accessiblity/consistency/free platforms) and positive example of the type of ecosystem of solutions we need to really service the building sector across all scales and stakeholders in decarbonizing how and what we build. So, how can for VC funds support the non profits that are key to enabling the growth and success of the for profit startups they are investing in?

But most first-time founders underestimate the difference that can make. Remember: The real cost of hiring is not measured just in the dollars spent finding the right person. It’s measured in the opportunity cost of not getting it right like lost momentum and stunted growth.

Note to self as a founder: In my 10-12 years of building, I’ve learned that what *not* to do is just as important as what *to* do. Here's a few key lessons: - Don’t hire smart L-1s only to look at things from 30,000 feet—this often leads to them anticipating and gaming your reactions, rather than driving true innovation. - Hiring consultants as full-time "Founder Office" and expecting them to validate your company’s direction can be a slippery slope. - There's a big difference between being accessible and having a real working relationship.
