Trial lawyer for the seriously injured | Trial Consultant | Founding partner at Diller Law, LLP | President of Massachusetts Academy of Trial Attorneys

What makes this Celtics team different than the ones that immediately preceded it?   In years past, each player seemed to be playing an isolated game and expecting too much from the one or two stars of the team.   This year, everyone accepts a role and egos do not get in the way.   Those same principles apply to the practice of law.   I have become a better trial lawyer since I stopped trying to do it all.   I am blessed to have surrounded myself with an excellent team who have distinct roles and help me focus on my strengths.   I rely on lawyers who focus on motion practice and identifying the right law.   I rely on lawyers who focus on developing the damages in my cases.   I have support staff that helps me organize discovery, exhibits and deadlines.   I rely on consultants to help with demonstrative aides and running technology during trial.   I recognize that not all lawyers have the luxury of such resources.   I remember there were days when I tried to do everything.   Sure, I learned when I was expected to do it all.   Now, I accept that there are others who can do things better than me.   I trust my teammates to free me up so I can excel in my expected role.   I now am a firm believer of collaboration and team-work.   Just like the Celtics have found ways to be a better team when each team-member fills his role, I am a better trial lawyer when I trust my teammates to fill their roles.

Your reflection on the power of teamwork, both in sports and in the legal profession, is truly inspiring. How has embracing this team-centric approach changed the way you view leadership and your role within the team?
