Learning ASL has taught me many important lessons about how to effectively communicate with others through more than just spoken language. This is a great representation of how rich ASL has the ability to be!

I had the opportunity to learn American Sign Language (ASL) in high school, and it was a truly enriching experience. It offered me a fascinating insight into the ASL community and made me think about how ASL allows for creativity in communication, highlighting some limitations of relying solely on spoken language. At a recent corporate retreat my firm hosted, Marcelo Montero discussed the importance of continuous reading, even in an era dominated by audiobooks and podcasts. Reading helps us expand our vocabulary, which in turn shapes our thoughts and the language we use to express them. A richer vocabulary leads to more nuanced and complex thinking. Now, consider the impact of learning multiple languages. Imagine the endless possibilities for our thoughts. Nobody out there talks about how it all started, and yet it’s one of the most important things to consider… if we want to understand the “real” organ music. Isn’t it funny how organists would ask public funding to pay millions to renovate historical instruments, yet don’t even spend 10 minutes studying actual historic sources themselves? Some call it narcissism, some call it lack of education… Ifor my part would like to spread the knowledge so we can help each other grow and create better quality art in future. So often I would see an organist sit down to play, and somehow can’t help but feel that they’re missing the essence of the instrument. What do we have today? Modern instruments adapted to play modern music. And even if they say it’s neo-baroque or something, that’s just modernize not even bothering to look through the lens of history. That’s why for me it’s historical instruments over everything else. Confirmed over the years time and time again. If you truly want to understand something, you need to step out of yourself and wear a pair of different shoes. With Music it’s no different.
