Lately, I’ve had a flood of headhunters reaching out, hyping up how I’d be a “perfect fit” for their companies. Sounds great, right? But here’s what happens next: I suggest a meeting to see if they are the right fit for me. …Crickets. Or worse, they send me a generic link or canned info about the company. 🙄 Here’s the thing: The brands I’ve actually worked with? They’ve gone the extra mile to establish a personal connection—offering real insight into their culture, mission, and why they believe we’d be a good match. And guess what? It doesn’t take a genius to figure out which companies I’ve said “yes” to. Lesson: If they’re too busy or indifferent to get to know their potential hire, they don’t really care about finding the best. 🚩 Know your worth, and don’t settle for less than genuine interest.

Received quite a few DMs last week from 1st and 2nd degree connections currently working in Professional Services, who said they'd be interested in chatting about the pathway to becoming CEO of a 10+ employee small business. Also had quite a few folks challenge me on the wisdom of appointing 'unproven' talent (vs competing against Private Equity for executives who've 'been there and done that') to such a critical role. The common theme I am hearing from the VC/PE Talent Partners and the Executive Search community, is that the name on the door of the search firm is not the most important factor in winning work. Talent Partners are looking for the individual track record of the Search Partner they are working with and they want that Partner to be leading the search, not palming it off to the team. Weekly at Tempting Talent, we speak with Principals or Partners who are at big name firms, who are reticent to leave their brand. Rather than viewing joining a boutique as taking a risk, you should view this is an opportunity to build your PERSONAL brand. Winning and completing 10 searches yourself, will outweigh being a part of 20 searches under someone else!
