🚚 Truck Driver Appreciation Week Spotlight: Meet Jeffrie N. Let’s give a shout-out to Jeffrie from our Arnold Branch! He’s been with us for 1.5 years, but his driving experience goes back almost 3 years. 🎉 Q: What do you enjoy most about being a driver? Jeffrie: "Being able to get out in the weather and speaking to some of the contractors." Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to new drivers? Jeffrie: "Always stay aware on the road—there are so many distracted drivers out there. Everyone’s got a cellphone in their hands. Practice defensive driving." Q: What's one thing about being a driver that might surprise people? Jeffrie: "We play a pivotal role in building society! Without us delivering materials on time, construction would be delayed. " Q: What’s your go-to road snack? Jeffrie: "Caffeine, for sure... but I don’t mind a good protein bar now and then." Interested in joining Jeffrie? Driving trucks isn’t for everyone. But if you’re responsible for finding and hiring people to pick up or deliver your goods, it can be frustrating to have minimal options from which to choose. Certainly, you can’t force people to apply for this position if they’re not interested. At the same time, there are a few things you can do to raise their interest level, giving you a larger hiring pool.
Tired of a small hiring pool? Here’s how to get more people interested in driving truck

When I’m hiring a driver, there are 4 particular qualities I’m looking for. (Here’s something I wouldn’t normally reveal). Yes, I do look for experience. Yes, I do look for a good attitude. But I mostly look for these 4 things: 1. A safety-conscious mind. This is a dangerous industry. A truck driver who understands and respects basic safety principles, mass/dimensions, fatigue and load restraint. But I want to see that this driver lives and breathes safety, first and foremost. 2. Attention to detail. You’re carrying thousands of tonnes of steel on the road. It can be a weapon if not used correctly. I want to hire a driver who knows their trucks and their HVNL obligations to a tee and, if they don’t, their willingness to learn the detail. If you can’t do detail, you can’t do trucks. 3. The ability to handle stress This is not a cosy office job. Things will come up that you don’t expect. Whether that’s something as simple as a traffic jam on a key route or something as terrifying as hitting a kangaroo. I want to feel confident that you can handle the job when things don’t go to plan. 4. A strong ‘why’. Yes, I know you want to be a truck driver because it pays. But I also want you to show me that you’re a driver for a personal reason – whether that’s because you love driving, you love being outside or you generally love the industry. I want you to tell me your story, and how my company can play a role in that story - otherwise you'll come and go, and recruitment and training is incredibly expensive. Anything I missed?
