Using Big4 Consultancy names in the hope for warranties of success? You may want to look at Theranos, Purdue Pharma and Sarepta Therapeutics… Managers face a HAHA-HANDFUL of risks when blindly following recommendations from Big4 consultancy firms: 🔴 Lack of context: Without fully understanding their own organization's quirks and nuances, blindly implementing recommendations can lead to solutions as useful as a rubber chicken at a board meeting. 🔴 One-size-fits-none: Big4 recommendations often come from the "encyclopedia of generic knowledge." But hey, every organization is a special snowflake, and blindly following the herd may not melt your unique challenges. 🔴 Info INCOMPLETE! 🕵️♀️: Consultants may not have the scoop on all the juicy details about your organization, its culture, and internal dynamics. Incomplete info can lead to recommendations as hollow as a magician's hat. 🔴 Short-term BOOMS over long-term BOONS: Big4 firms may love the quick wins and flashy numbers, but remember, strategy isn't just about winning the office ping-pong tournament. Blindly chasing short-term goals can be a circus without a ringleader. 🔴 Change is SCARY! 😱: People like new things but they hate change! Resistance can turn your project into a clown car without wheels. 💚 Managers, don't be the punchline! C-Suite 'bloat' is in the news at the moment. We're not talking waistlines though - we're talking about the the number and type of CxO roles within larger organisations. Is it necessary or is it just playing to people's vanity? This BBC News article examines why the C-Suite has grown enormously in the last few decades. Factors include: global companies operate in complex environments; public accountability of CEOs on socio-political and economic issues; and growing technological complexity demanding a broader skillset.    There is evidence of over-hiring - C-Suite roles with overlapping spheres of responsibility - and some roles that are more superficial, so-called 'temporary' executives. There's a case for a fractional executives covering some of these roles that are targeting a mid-term strategic concern (e.g. Chief AI Officers). (I still think dogs as Chief Happiness Officers is a no-brainer though).   The CEO is one person, and no matter how qualified, they will need help navigating today's business landscape, so there is value in an expanded C-Suite. But with more than 150 C-Suite titles, the impact of the title is diluted in all but the most important roles. What are your thoughts? Advisory for mid-sized businesses that know the RIGHT-SIZED systems and PREREQS for embracing a new layer of control... are SUPER RARE. That's why when I talk to these businesses, they are either jaded and don't trust we'll do right by them or they've taken the plunge with traditional advisory firms and were BURNT REAL BAD. Tons of money spent for recommendations that didn't fit... and that glossed over what was truly important to get them from 0 to 1. It's a massive step and only a small part of it is dependent on technology -- most of it is centered around maturing business processes and getting teams to align on what must be done. Easily said. Difficult to do. (Joe McIntyre recently wrote about not just being on the same page, but also in the same sentence on that page.) That's why so many that attempt to do that part in-house, give up. A great way to avoid that fate is to look externally. A right-sized advisory firm doesn't own your budget, isn't invested in the status quo, and can ask questions that would make even the most bullish among your team nervous. Agree?
