The RESED group from the Eindhoven University of Technology, led by Arjan Habraken, works on projects related to Resource Efficient Structural Engineering and Design. Today, RESED is presenting the design thesis of Luuk Kassing. In his project a circular radially retractable roof is designed by means of a parametric design process. “Mobile and reusable structures have become more prevalent including the use of retractable roofs. Most retractable roof types consist of large rigid elements which are retracted by translation or rotation. However, such rigid elements require undesired large ground areas in the open configuration. To minimize these large areas, a radially retractable roof structure can be developed. This deployable structure is characterized as a pantographic structure in which scissor-like elements enable geometrical foldability. Similar as to the mechanics of a scissor, straight bars are rotated around a joint, causing a change in configuration as illustrated by (Akgün et al., 2011). Using the same principle, the radially retractable roof structure can fold radially outwards from the closed to open configuration. To investigate and evaluate the structural behavior of the radially retractable roof, a parametric model is developed with the help of Grasshopper. As a starting point, a circular radially retractable roof structure of 50 meters diameter will be analyzed. The structure consists of a double layer diagrid structural system connected by diagonal elements, forming truss structures. The diagrid structural system is created by a specific number of multi-angulated elements (MAE’s) in both the clockwise and counterclockwise direction. These MAE’s are continuous structural elements with multiple kinks, forming an arch by multiple straight segments. Hi all! Currently, I am working on my Graduation Project as part of my master 'Architecture, Building and Planning; track Structural Engineering and Design'. The design objective of this project is to follow "a parametric design process towards a circular radially retractable roof by detailed structural analyses and optimizations". I thought it would be interesting to give updates on the progress of my Graduation Project. In this first post, I give an introduction to the topic and describe the starting point for the parametric design.

From defining element sizes to considering seam placement for structural efficiency, attention to detail is key. 3️⃣ Fabrication Information: Accurate cutting patterns and efficient seam placement ensure smooth assembly and optimal material use. 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 ◾ 𝑾𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒍𝒚 𝑨𝒑𝒑𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒅: It's a standard practice in designing buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure, especially when dealing with materials like steel and reinforced concrete that have well-defined elastic characteristics. ◾ 𝑭𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒙 𝑨𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒚𝒔𝒊𝒔: Serves as the basis for more complex design philosophies, including plastic design, particularly in steel structures where ductility is a factor.
