Did you know that faith based organizations are eligible for some hazard mitigation grants? Do you know how to engage your faith based partners? My friend and colleague, and the single nicest person at FEMA, Marcus Coleman put together this guide on engaging partners and expanding mitigation, pre and post disaster. With mitigation now eligible even for individual assistance, it is a time to think beyond government entities. 🚨The recent collapse of the Baltimore Key Bridge is a prime example of effective crisis response. In the article titled "The Baltimore Key Bridge Collapse is a Master Class in Effective Disaster Response," we see how efficient crisis communications were executed: ⏰ Timely Response: 31 minutes after the incident, Maryland Transportation Authority closed bridge traffic, initiated rescue efforts, & shared info via social media. 🏃♂️ Effective Response: Emergency units were dispatched immediately & $60 million in relief funds were mobilized swiftly to ensure public safety & aid recovery efforts. 🤝 Community Approach: A collaborative strategy was employed, involving all levels of government & public entities to address community needs for a unified response. In disasters, the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) is the response agency for Emergency Support Function 6 (Mass Care, Emergency Assistance, Housing, and Human Services). It also funds statewide safety net programs that serve the most vulnerable children and their families on blue sky days. Hear from those federal and grantees about their real-world disaster response and recovery experience and what we must do together to reach out and improve the relationships between response agencies, public-private partners, and vulnerable communities.

Some of the most rewarding experiences of my career as a civil servant have come from deployments. In total, I spent more than three years working in austere conditions, in war zones, side by side with members of our own military, partners from allied countries, and foreign government leaders from both established and developing nations. The conditions, at times, were brutal; the work was invariably difficult; and, though I came through it relatively unscathed, I am also very much aware of how lucky I am to be able to say that. It was humbling, and hard, and both physically and emotionally exhausting—and still, I wouldn’t trade it for anything else. And I would absolutely do it again. It’s hard to explain, but work like that—the mission, at its most immediate and visceral level—is addictive. Today, at DHS, we need people to join our ranks and provide immediate assistance, not to a foreign nation, but to our neighbors and fellow citizens affected by unprecedented natural disasters. It’s not a war zone, but the conditions might be similarly challenging and austere. In many places, people don’t have power, roads, or public services, and they may only have the shelter, food, and water they can bring with them. Even if conditions are less austere—the work is sure to challenging. If you’re in my network, and you’re eligible—especially if you’ve never done anything like this before—I encourage you to apply. The one thing that I can guarantee is that you won’t regret it. And, if you’re the kind of person I am, and many of my best friends and colleagues are—you might even find it to be addictive.

As of 5-Oct-2024, FEMA has responded to 151 emergencies, playing a crucial role in safeguarding communities across the U.S. by coordinating disaster relief efforts, providing emergency housing & deploying essential resources. Their work ensures that when crises strike, people receive the help they need to recover and rebuild. During the ongoing North Carolina emergency, it is vital to stop the spread of false claims and disinformation—our focus must remain on supporting those in need and delivering critical assistance to the affected communities.
