👑 🇬🇧 Empire Day: The Hidden Narrative on Queen Victoria's Birthday Empire Day was a day of celebration in the United Kingdom and its colonies, marking the pride and unity of the British Empire. Originating in 1902, it was observed on May 24th, the birthday of Queen Victoria, given her significant role in the expansion of the British Empire during her reign. Streets were decorated with flags, children sang songs of the Empire in schools, and people told stories of its 'benevolence' and 'greatness'. But this wasn't mere celebration; it was a powerful tool of indoctrination. It subtly ingrained in the British psyche the idea that their Empire was noble and just. Yet beneath this facade of pomp and festivity, it symbolized a history of oppression and exploitation. An example of how celebrations can mask deeper, often uncomfortable truths, and how false narratives can be deeply embedded in societal celebrations. By the late 1950s, as the empire began to decline, Empire Day changed into the more subdued 'Commonwealth Day,'( in March), focusing on unity and cooperation rather than imperial dominance. Historical narratives are essential for understanding the past and shaping an equitable and informed future. #history #education #Britain

In the wake of October 7th events, the initial lukewarm response to Israel's reaction from the #international community was disheartening. It's troubling to still see some justifications for actions that, by any humane standard, were excessive. The unconditional support from allies not only lacked moral guidance but seemingly emboldened further disproportionate responses. This isn't just about one nation's decisions; it's a collective failure to uphold humanitarian principles. We must confront this reality and advocate for more ethical and balanced approaches in conflict resolution. #leadership #politics #peace #CeaseFireNow

Explain to me again why China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US have veto power? "The veto power is controversial. Supporters regard it as a promoter of international stability, a check against military interventions, and a critical safeguard against United States domination 🤔. Critics say that the veto is the most undemocratic element of the UN, as well as the main cause of inaction on war crimes and crimes against humanity, as it effectively prevents UN action against the permanent members and their allies".😲 🌐 🤮 😭 #UnitedNations #HumanRights #power #politics

It's becoming painfully clear that the value of a life, in the eyes of powerful nations, is often measured by strategic interests rather than humanitarian need. In war-torn Syria, Congo, Ukraine, Palestine, Afghanistan, or the hunger-stricken corners of the world, the decisive factor for intervention too frequently hinges on what there is to gain. This stark reality underscores a profound moral failing in global politics, where the sanctity of human life is overshadowed by the cold calculus of political and economic benefits. #equality #control #humanrights #PowerDynamics

⚖️ ⏳️ History of Equality - From the Gods to the Common Man The tradition of celebrating birthdays began in ancient Egypt with pharaohs' coronations and was later adopted by the Greeks and Romans, evolving from a divine rite to a celebration for every individual. While early Christians viewed birthdays with skepticism, the tradition eventually gained acceptance, leading to the modern birthday celebrations we know today, complete with cakes, gifts, and parties. It's indeed a beautiful idea to celebrate the day one is born. I recently chose not to celebrate my birthday in the traditional sense but instead took a moment to appreciate being alive, living in peace, and without fear. Life itself, every day, is a celebration. 🎉🕊️ #History #peace #Equality #culture

Positive news in the world of children's literature! A recent survey found a 26% increase in racially minoritised characters since 2017. It's definitely step in the right direction, but there's more work to do, as this progress is vital for representation and inclusivity. It's a call to action for Black and ethnic authors: your voices and stories matter. Keep writing and enriching the literary landscape with diverse perspectives. Our children need to see themselves in the stories they read. #Diversity #Books #inclusion #Education #RepresentationMatters https://lnkd.in/gMGkyrCK

Sometimes we get caught up in 'first world problems' or 'luxury problems' – like frustration over ⛱️ having to wake up at 4 am because you're going on vacation. 🖥 Trying to find something you want to watch on Netflix. 🚘Your commute to work is so short it only gets your car warm when I get there. 🚰 There’s nothing to drink at home except an unlimited supply of fresh drinking water. It's natural, but then we often catch ourselves and realize these are minor compared to more significant struggles others face. If you find yourself bothered by this realization, you're not alone. What helps is shifting our focus to gratitude and empathy for broader global challenges. Maybe volunteer or help someone facing real hardships. How do you recalibrate when small annoyances feel big? Share your thoughts. #mindset #perpective #LuxuryProblems #MakingADifference https://lnkd.in/eeHzgp8p
