Is there a trade-off between customer needs and sustainability? In the case of Hilti Group, the answer is rarely. According to Graham B., Sustainability Project Manager at Hilti, customers are increasingly aligned on rapid decarbonization, recognizing its urgency in construction and infrastructure. But here’s the real challenge: standardization. Graham points out that customer resistance isn’t the main hurdle — it’s the lack of consensus on documentation and calculation methods. Without standardized approaches, progress slows. Another key shift? Carbon reduction is now central to building certifications. Take LEED v5, for example — nearly half of its points now focus on carbon. Graham also highlights the importance of multi-attribution in sustainability strategy. A truly sustainable building isn’t just low-carbon at construction — it must also be durable and valuable for decades. This means evaluating multiple factors beyond embodied carbon, including resource efficiency, recyclability, and human health impacts. Without a multi-attribution approach, sustainability decisions risk overlooking long-term performance and circularity. 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀: They are often made from recycled or renewable resources, helping to reduce waste. 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: By using fewer toxic chemicals, they create safer environments for workers and occupants. Shifting gears to create sustainable change As engineering and construction leaders grapple with reducing emissions, a recent research and major transport project shows timely, accurate and verifiable data is key. Among the sustainability innovations being trialled on Victoria’s M80 Ring Road Completion are an onsite hydrogen generator and a system for calculating embodied carbon in design. Ross Brookshaw is ACCIONA’s Sustainability Manager on the M80 Ring Road Completion, a major road project connecting Melbourne’s western and northern suburbs. Speaking at an industry roundtable on the future of sustainable construction hosted by Nearmap and Engineers Australia, Brookshaw emphasised the need for “significant and timely action” on emissions across the engineering and construction sector. The experience implementing sustainability initiatives on the M80 Ring Road Completion highlighted the challenges and opportunities facing broader industry decarbonisation efforts explored in recent research from Nearmap. 🤯 The construction industry consumes 40% of raw materials worldwide. BCIA President to join sustainability debate at this year’s UK Construction Week BCIA President Stacey Lucas will be joining the Construction Leadership Council’s (CLC) thought-provoking panel at UK Construction Week 2024 to further discussion on the sustainability challenges facing the built environment. Offering an incredible opportunity to discuss the construction industry’s sustainability practices and the UK’s journey towards net zero in 2050, the panel will launch the eighth version of the CLC’s CZ Performance Framework. Developed to provide the CLC with a sector-level dashboard on the progress towards net zero and motivate businesses to enhance their sustainability strategies, the Performance Framework is closely aligned with Government policy and focuses heavily on carbon measurement and assessment. As an association that has sustainability at the forefront of everything it does, the BCIA is keen to work with other industry leaders and policy makers to further knowledge and understanding on the importance of decarbonisation and the vital role building automation can play. BCIA President Stacey Lucas underlined the need for the construction industry to come together to improve sustainability practices and reduce carbon emissions with the 2050 net zero target in mind.
