A thought provoking trip to the Hello Tomorrow conference in Paris last week, and an interesting venue at CENTQUATRE-PARIS.   A few take-aways: ⚒ A DeepTech conference 'sticking to its principles' – with a good covering of proper ‘hardtech’, involving physical products and solutions, with AI a supporting act rather than a leading light 💎 A vibrant snapshot of the deep tech start-up community. Tough funding conditions clearly aren’t dampening the spirits of high quality start-ups across the continent   💶 European DeepTech is maturing – with many attendees reporting an uptick in attention on go-to-market and value chains etc., an evolution from a pure tech focus 🌲 The Green Tech start-up community is alive and well – with start-ups continuing to come through in Power-to-X and Carbon Capture – all the way from pre-seed/seed through to series A and beyond 💻 Optimism on quantum computing continues – with an observation that the market now needs to make the step from being a vertical industry to a horizontal proposition 🤖 The hype around AI (at least at Hello Tomorrow) appears to be normalising slightly – with a lowering of concern on AI ‘becoming sentient’, but with continued concern on regulation and the need to balance safety concerns with remaining competitive with markets at the other end of the regulatory spectrum   ⚡ There were also a few hints of the potential for growing attention on the potential negative environmental impact of AI itself – with an observation that over the next 2 years, electricity consumption for training of LLMs will grow by 10x, to reach the electricity consumption of Japan, a sobering thought.   I may be viewing things through rose coloured spectacles, but is there a chance that the need for AI to remain perceived as ‘positively sustainable’ may in itself drive real scalable investment in Green Tech and in particular in carbon capture technologies? #hellotomorrow
