It's so important how we use our words. A moments thought about the language we use can change our relationships in very deep ways. Words can shut people down or help them to open up. It's timely seeing these great tools for social workers as I'm just co-facilitating a Practice and Learning event for social workers, family support workers and PAs around use of language within the context of relational practice.

Growing up male doesn’t mean growing up in an emotional wasteland. But navigating the inner terrain requires help. Caring adults can broaden the emotional language used with boys by asking some of the same questions included here or even something as simple as, “How do you feel about (blank)?” Boys navigate hundreds of pieces of stimuli daily; helping them pause to check in with their response to it all builds emotional intelligence, one of the most important components in developing strong relationships. #teenagers #healthyrelationships #teendating #youngmen #parentingteens

THINKING: Adam F.C. Fletcher's "A Future Without Adultism" is not merely a scholarly article but a manifesto for change, advocating for a future where age does not dictate one's value or capability. Sharing and discussing this work can significantly impact our collective journey toward a future that respects and values the contributions of all, regardless of age. I love that Fletcher delineates a future where societal discrimination against youth and bias towards adults are absent, envisioning a world that embraces sustained democracy, freedom, and justice for all, irrespective of age or other biases. This vision challenges current paradigms and offers a blueprint for transformative societal change. In my newest journal article, I wrote a piece called "A Future Without Adultism" for Taboo: The Journal on Culture and Education. DAY 10: Boundaries at Home. Teaching children about boundaries at home helps them understand to respect other people's spaces. Parents and guardians should model boundary-respecting behaviors by asking for their permission before giving hugs, tickles, or other forms of physical affection. Respect when they say “no” to help them feel comfortable setting boundaries with others. Encourage siblings to respect each other’s personal space and show them how to ask before taking each other’s belongings or giving hugs. Create a safe environment for questions by being open to any queries they may have about their bodies or relationships. When they ask questions, answer them honestly in simple, age-appropriate language. Use these conversations to reinforce that their body is their own, and they have the right to decide who can touch them and when. Let them know that even family members should respect boundaries. For example, parents might help with bathing or dressing when they’re younger, but as they grow, they can choose to do these things independently. Encourage privacy when they’re using the bathroom or changing clothes, reinforcing the idea that everyone’s body deserves respect and privacy. Often we believe that we know our children too well. But does that also restrict us to all the possibilities? Let's be open to possibilities. In any communication or event, there may be more than what you know or assume. Therefore: Choose the benefit of the doubt over immediate negative reactions in parenting. Let us transform our role with children to an understanding ally that keeps the door open for conversations. If you want to take this path and belief forward in your lives, seek workshops by Ginny's Planet on: 1. Empathy in Action 2. Being different is okay! 3. What is relational bullying? Contact us at: trainings@ginnysplanet.com Let's build a world where every child grows up believing that: I have rights, respect, and choices. I am okay. Being different is okay! How Can We Teach Our Kids to Respect Differences in Today’s Polarized World? 🌍💬 In a world full of differing opinions, teaching respect amid differences is one of the most valuable lessons we can impart to our children. Here's how you can guide them: - Encourage Empathy: Teach them to listen, understand, and appreciate different viewpoints. Respect begins with empathy. 🤝💡 - Foster Open Conversations: Create a safe space where your child feels comfortable asking questions about opposing views. It's not about agreeing, but understanding. 🗣️💬 - Model Respectful Behavior: Show them how to disagree respectfully. Kids learn best by observing their parents. 👀💖 - Focus on Common Ground: Instead of dwelling on differences, help your child see shared values and interests. 🌱🤝 - Raising kids in today’s polarized world isn’t about avoiding differences, it’s about teaching them to embrace respect, understanding, and kindness. 💬 How do you teach your kids to navigate differing opinions respectfully?
