🦠 A national action plan to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR)… Earlier this month, the government announced its new 5 year action plan on AMR, to protect the public and animals from drug-resistant infections. As part of the UK’s 20-year vision to control and contain AMR by 2040, the new plan spans 2024-2029. It will commit the UK to reducing its use of antimicrobials in humans and animals, strengthen surveillance of drug-resistant infections before they emerge, and incentivise the industry to develop the next generation of treatments. To achieve this, the plan has 9 strategic outcomes focused under 4 themes: 🔶 Reducing the need for, and unintentional exposure to, antimicrobials 🔶 Optimising the use of antimicrobials 🔶 Investing in innovation, supply, and access 🔶 Being a good global partner in maintaining the UK’s role as an international leader on AMR AMR is a global public health threat. 🌍 Saving Lives: How Early Access Programs Address Antibiotic Resistance 🌍 Antibiotic resistance is now the third leading cause of death globally, claiming nearly 5 million lives annually. The impact is especially severe in low- and middle-income countries. A recent article in The Lancet estimated that there is the potential to save 92 million lives between 2025-2050 by improving access to antibiotics.
