Looking forward to joining OMP in São Paolo at the beginning of April. A favourite client in a city which holds to many great memories thanks to its hosting of the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos.
Although I’ll be focusing on giving a valuable keynote presentation and meeting delegates, I will also be using the trip to reflect on the 30th anniversary of tragic weekend of April 30/May 1 1994 when our sport lost two drivers I knew - Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna. Senna’s final resting place is in Morumbi cemetery, and I’ll be making a visit to pay my respects.
Many people ask me how Formula 1 has moved from being a sport which was so poor at managing risk to one which appears to have mastered it. An obvious question given that we suffered over 40 Formula 1 driver fatalities between 1950 and 1994, yet only 1 since - the late and much missed Jules Bianchi who died in 2015.
The answer of course is that the risks remain but a transformation in safety culture and technology - the latter aided enormously by our data-driven environment which has enabled measurement, analysis & improvement - has been one of the most profound changes I have witnessed during my career.
While Formula 1 is now enjoying greater popularity and commercial success than ever, the fact that all its competitors can enjoy a long and safe career is down to the work of many people over the past 30 years. A reminder that sustained high performance & winning outcomes are built on foundations of effective risk management, quality, reliability and operational excellence.
