Raising awareness on how cancer treatment can impact women’s health and sex. More needs to be done around education to build confidence and enable people to have conversations. Health professionals need to be informed and be supported to obtain the skills so that they are equipped to broach this topic and for cancer patients to feel safe (when they feel vulnerable) and provided the opportunity to ask questions about their body and the changes they are going through. Great video to watch.
Tens of thousands of people with cancer are ‘suffering in silence’ with concerns around sex. We know cancer impacts people in many ways, be it financially, emotionally, or physically. But we need to talk about how cancer can affect our relationships and sex lives. That’s why we’re so proud to be partnering with Lovehoney UK – part of Lovehoney Group and the UK’s leading sexual wellness brand – to shine a light on the impact cancer can have on people’s sexual wellbeing and to encourage those impacted to have open conversations and access support. As part of our collaboration, we have launched a new content series called We Need To Talk About Sex and Cancer. The series will feature people from across the UK sharing their unique experiences with sex, relationships and intimacy, following a cancer diagnosis. In the first instalment of our series, we meet Ellie (22), who was diagnosed with cancer at just 14. We’re incredibly proud and grateful to her for sharing her experience. #SexAndCancer #Survivorship is not just about overcoming cancer; it is a journey through the consequences of #CancerTreatments, either physical or emotional. When choosing treatments, be aware that some are permanent and would affect #QualityOfLife. Let's learn to have #PlainConversation with our patients and offer #support now and in the future. Let's talk about #SexAndCancer, such a hidden but tremendously important issue. #SimultaneousPalliativeCare #SupportiveCare

As an advice nurse, I often encounter individuals facing unexpected challenges in their health journey. A recent article titled “I wasn’t prepared for not being able to have sex” highlights a poignant reality many face after medical treatments. The story of a young woman who underwent intense cancer treatment only to find herself grappling with infertility and the inability to engage in sexual activity is a stark reminder of the long-term impacts of medical interventions. It’s crucial to address these “taboo” topics openly and provide support for all aspects of recovery, including sexual health. Let’s break the silence and ensure comprehensive care that includes conversations about sexuality and intimacy post-treatment. #Healthcare #PatientCare #SexualHealth

This is an important read for those who believe that it isn’t necessary to prevent the development of these pre-cancerous lesions, beacuse they can be treated! HPV vaccines prevent the development of these lesions, the morbidity inherent in their treatment AND the actual cancer-related disease and deaths that can follow infections with these oncogenic viruses. These cancers can affect both sexes, in both the genital and oropharyngeal areas, so all children should be offered this vaccine, now as a single dose, before they begin sexualised experimentation. Seeking high rates of vaccine coverage for all has the potential to reduce community transmission of these viruses, in the same way we have reduced the threats from rubella.
“What no one raised was the longer-term pain and altered sensations I might experience because of treatment, and the impact this might have on my sex life.” Linda Geddes sheds light on how cervical pre-cancer treatments can affect women’s health: #HPV

"Even then, in phenotypes with strong sex differences, one sex can still skew results, reiterating the need for conducting sex-split analyses. Because male-biased research is exceedingly common, the study of sex differences suffers from a relative paucity of available data, especially in complex disease models. This review summarizes sex-stratified findings in AD and related dementias." #alzheimers #alzheimersdisease https://lnkd.in/gwh5tTqH
