Some employers have this dismissive stance. They believe "soldier go, soldier come, barracks remain." It carries an undertone that shows "employees can leave but in the end, it's my business." Much as this is true on one hand, some soldiers shouldn't be made to leave easily. Some carry so much weight that the barracks never remains the same when they leave. Their shoes become too big to be filled by a single person. It may require paying two people to fill those shoes. Before you accept the resignation of your employees, ask questions and try to understand why he or she is leaving. Try to woo that employee back. If it doesn't work, youve tried your best.

1940s: The birth of the staffing industry The first iteration of the modern staffing industry as we know it came about in the 1940s during World War II. As employees went to fight overseas, they left behind open positions and businesses were struggling to make do.  More staffing agencies were established out of the demand to help businesses fill those positions quickly. Once the war ended, the staffing industry only grew, as soldiers returning home relied on staffing agencies to find work again. #didyouknow #wednesdaytrivia #workforcebrokers #staffing

There's a lot of interesting observations about the number of strikes and striking workers in the United States. 🛠️ If we take a second to put things into perspective we realize the current trend, although positive, only brings us back to 90s level, nothing exceptional yet. However, one number sticks out, the average size of strikes within a year. The 3 record years, since 1947, have all been in recent times : 14k in 2022, 17k in 2019, and 24k in 2018. 🔎 This is due to a growing aversion to site-specific action and a wider commitment, from the base and the leadership, to industrial level action. 🤝 The recent victory of 45,000 striking longshoremen and the UAW threat of a company-wide strike at Stelantis to save Belvidere only confirms this major shift in labor's history. If you're a vet and your skills line up with any of these positions, these are always worth attending. You'll get (virtual) face time with in-house recruiters and sometimes even hiring managers. So much better than the usual fire and forget mode of online applications. Seriously, if you're job hunting check it out.

"Employment prospects can be dim for military spouses" - I try to keep my posts unrelated to my personal life, but this article needs to be circulated and awareness spread. Not only was it difficult to find a career in a flooded market of job seekers, but I also had barriers to my husband's assignment of timing. In fact, during most interviews, his assignment and my plans were commonly discussed. Employers are not always interested in being flexible about deployment days, homecoming reunions, etc. I agree (perhaps a bit biased) that spouses can be the firepower for the workforce, and many are missing amazing talent opportunities. A recent sad story in the Washington Post about the strike at Boeing and what it says about the changing relationship between employer and employee struck a chord with me. In my lifetime — and I’m not so old yet — many big companies like Boeing helped generations of people put food on the table and were also magnificent corporate citizens of their communities. But now workers see how these corporations seem to have lost their way. This is an important moment of reckoning for young people entering the workforce. It shows that training programs and other support of the type offered by an organization I lead, Great Jobs KC, is more crucial than ever. Young people in the workforce no longer can rely on a benevolent manufacturer to nurture their skills, provide for their families and lift up their community. That role is now being filled, as it must be, by nonprofits in support of local employers, regional universities and our own people. This is the path to prosperity that we have found in Kansas City, and it can work elsewhere. When corporations are loyal only to their bottom lines and to shareholders, communities need others to step in and step up.

As the strike of 33,000 Boeing workers continued into its 20th day, National Association of Manufacturers - NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons has released the following statement on the strike at Boeing: “The potential economic impact of this strike cannot be overstated.
