Following its earlier report (see my earlier post) on the Future of #RetailBanking which could be considered as a sneak preview, the European Association of Co-operative Banks Association of Cooperative Banks, has now published its Manifesto with key recommendations for the upcoming legislative term 2024-2029. Titled “Cooperative Banks’ Contribution to the Future of Europe” (https://lnkd.in/e3NUxqen) it looks at how cooperative banks can support the challenges that Europe is facing and what is needed to unlock their full potential. The European Banking Federation has crafted a visionary memorandum titled "Financing the Future: a Strategic Banking Sector for a Competitive Europe". This document sets out key recommendations to strenghten Europe's economic resilience and global competitiveness. Here is an overview of the priorities set out in the memorandum: 1️⃣ 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲'𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆: Meeting Europe's ambitous investment needs, estimated at €1 trillion a year, trough collaboration between banks and capital markets. 2️⃣ 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Aligning financial strategies with environmental objectives to support the success of the EU Green Deal. 3️⃣ 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀: Promoting Europe's leadership in digital finance and creating a cyber-resilient ecosystem. Today, the #EBF unveiled recommendations for Europe's leaders in their document, "Financing the Future: a Strategic Banking Sector for a Competitive Europe." Key topics include boosting economic potential, supporting the EU #GreenDeal, fostering #digitaltransformation, and completing the Single Market for #FinancialServices. The EBF stated that Europe's #banks stand poised as essential catalysts for progress, ready to fund substantial investments. However, achieving this requires a #regulatoryframework fostering competitiveness and profitability. The urgent advancement of European capital markets is crucial to mobilising #privateinvestment and increasing financing capacity, including revitalising the securitisation market. The document urges policymakers to recognise the vital role of the #bankingsector in driving growth and strategic autonomy for a sustainable European future. Bridging financing gaps in areas underserved by commercial banks, such as micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). Acting as a countercyclical force, particularly during financial crises. Promoting financial inclusion and funding development in local communities. Global Context and Challenges Achieving the SDGs requires tackling systemic economic and financial challenges, such as: Short-term financial focus over long-term sustainable development. Impact on Economies: Improving cross-border payments is expected to benefit both advanced economies and emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs), contributing to greater financial integration and reducing the risk of market fragmentation. 3. Technological Solutions: A variety of emerging technological solutions are being recognized, which differ in technical and design features, as well as the involvement of public and private sectors. The G7 endorses responsible innovation that promotes interoperability between new and existing payment systems. 4. Core Values and Standards: The statement underscores the need for payment solutions to adhere to values of the International Monetary and Financial System, including transparency, the rule of law, sound economic governance, and competition. It also highlights the importance of following international standards, such as those set by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and Principles for Financial Market Infrastructures. 5. Support for Development: The G7 expresses its commitment to supporting technical assistance and capacity building to develop fast payment systems and to connect them as they evolve. 6. International Cooperation: The statement reaffirms the G7's support for international cooperation, particularly with EMDEs, through the G20 Roadmap. It supports ongoing initiatives by the Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures (CPMI) regarding the governance and oversight of fast payment systems and anticipates recommendations from the Financial Stability Board (FSB) to address discrepancies in data frameworks related to cross-border payments.
