🌍✨Today, May 20th, we celebrate International Clinical Trials Day, marking the anniversary of the first clinical trial by Scottish physician James Lind aboard the HMS Salisbury in 1747. Lind's pioneering work laid the foundation for modern clinical research.✨🌍 🍋 In the 18th century, scurvy was a deadly threat to sailors, caused by a lack of vitamin C. It devastated entire fleets and claimed more lives at sea than all other diseases, shipwrecks, or battles combined. ⚓ James Lind, a surgeon on the HMS Salisbury, was determined to find a cure. He selected 12 sailors with scurvy, divided them into pairs, and tested six treatments, including citrus fruits. The men who received citrus showed significant improvement within a week. 💡 Lind’s work illustrates the importance of experimentation in medical science, paving the way for today's controlled clinical trials. 🎆 💊 As we celebrate International Clinical Trials Day, we honor James Lind and all researchers dedicated to advancing medical science. It’s been a remarkable 277 years since James Lind (a ship’s surgeon in the British Royal Navy) conducted the first-ever randomised clinical trial and discovered that citrus fruits could help cure scurvy. As a company dedicated to maximising the success of clinical trials, we understand the profound impact they can have on patients worldwide. Whilst we have come a long way, there's still immense potential to make clinical trials even more effective and get treatments to patients much faster. A true story of personal transformation and gratitude. As we approach Thanksgiving, we wanted to share the incredible story of Kerrie – a weight loss trial participant at Atlas Clinical Research. Her journey is not just inspiring. It was life-changing. Two years ago, Kerrie faced significant health challenges due to her weight. But everything changed when she enrolled in a clinical trial at Atlas Clinical Research. The result? With hard work and commitment, Kerrie lost a remarkable 127 pounds, a journey that has not only transformed her body but saved her life. Kerrie’s story is one of courage, determination, and immense gratitude. She often says that this opportunity gave her a second chance at life. Her journey is a powerful reminder of the impact clinical research can have on an individual level. But Kerrie's story is bigger than her own transformation. It's a reflection of what Atlas Clinical Research stands for. We are more than a site network conducting clinical trials; we are a community that deeply cares about every human being we work with. The Holiday Weekend As we are entering the Memorial Holiday weekend in the States, I would like to extend my thanks and encouragement to all my pharmacy colleagues who will be serving their patients and communities over this long weekend.  There will likely be a few situations that you have to deal with which most people will not understand. I can recall one such weekend where on a Saturday morning when a patient called me who was visiting from out of town.  Within about 3 sentences, her voice went from upbeat and chipper to all out tears as she admitted she came to town to visit family and left her medicine at home over 200 miles away.  She knew only the most general things about her medicines.  For example, she knew the ballpark name of her medications, but not the dose or frequency.  (“I take something for blood pressure that starts with an ‘L’ and it may be 20/25mg?”) My next few hours were set as I was now on a safari to figure these things out. Once the situation was figured out, the patient expressed great gratitude. The thing is, far too few people know what a pharmacy is like on a weekend like this.  Your boss likely doesn’t know and may not even want to know.  But we know the adventures that await us on long holiday weekends.
