Well it's Friday afternoon so here's an interesting one for you - Not one of our councils so we haven't been asked for advice here, but if we had been what would we have recommended? I can see the common sense approach by the council but equally I'm all for maintaining traditions, where would we be without our historic, often quite dangerous and mad traditions. Think Ottery Tar Barrels, Cheese Rolling in the Cotswolds, Wife Carrying in Dorking or Ashbournes Shrovetide Football or the more mundane work charming or nettle eating (please do feel free to check these out on the internet). The list is endless and all with a certain degree of risk attached to them. Health & Safety is there to reduce risk but as schools are now realising play without risk does not teach children how to recognise risk so what's the answer? In this case I'm guessing it's more the safe lifting techniques & safeguarding issues with regards children more than the actual head bumping. What do you think?

If staff in your hospital are saying violence is "part of the job", they have given up... ▶ They have given up hope the organization can protect them. ▶ They have given up on their own personal safety. ▶ They have given up on being safe at work. ▶ They have given up on reporting violence. ▶ They have given up on senior leadership. 📣 If these words are being uttered by leaders AND line staff, this has become part of your culture. 💫 But it's never too late to change for the better. The best way to start? By asking your staff about violence, listening to their concerns, and starting to address them. NSW large businesses and government agencies take note: SafeWork NSW is ramping up its oversight, particularly targeting ‘high-risk’ and ‘large businesses and Government agencies’. This means inspectors will be conducting Psychosocial WHS Checks for workplaces with 200 or more workers, including contractors and volunteers. Compliance with WHS legislation on managing mental health hazards is crucial, and failure to comply could lead to serious legal consequences. Large or small businesses (and those in senior management) are required to remove, as far as practicable, psychosocial hazards under WHS legislation. Good coverage in The Chronicle today of The Australian Workers' Union’s Queensland Health Workplace Violence Action Plan - five common sense measures that our members are calling for to reduce violence in the workplace. Our Plan includes: 👥 More security officer FTE positions across the state. 🚨A statewide minimum standard of protective equipment for security and staff. 🧑🎓Fit-for-purpose occupational violence training. ⚖️ Enforceable laws to protect staff and hold perpetrators to account. 🩼 Streamlined WorkCover claims for injured staff. Because of our members’ grassroots action, the Queensland Government has committed funding for 70 new security officer positions in their latest budget. This is a great start, but there is still more left to do if we are going to see a reduction of violence in our public hospitals. After a string of high profile incidents in the past few weeks, it is time for Queensland Health to introduce a statewide minimum standard of protective equipment for security officers and staff. Our frontline health workers deserve to be safe at work.
