Second Effort to Tow Burning Tanker in Red Sea Begins Shipping Arabia, September 14, 2024 — A renewed effort to tow a burning tanker out of a hazardous area in the Red Sea is set to commence this Friday, following a prior unsuccessful attempt due to safety concerns. The operation targets the Greek-flagged tanker Sounion, which has been in distress since an attack by Houthi rebels three weeks ago. The European Union naval force, Aspides, has announced it will provide protection during the salvage operation aimed at relocating the tanker to a safe location. Currently anchored and stable, there have been no reports of oil leakage from the vessel, mitigating immediate environmental risks. The new attempt to secure the tanker comes with strict precautions, including a navigational warning for other ships to maintain a distance of at least five nautical miles from the operation site. The challenges faced by the salvage team are significant, given the ongoing conflicts in the region and the tanker's condition. The Sounion was attacked on August 21 and subsequently boarded by rebels, complicating the salvage operations. This operation involves multiple vessels, including the Greek-flagged tug Agaion Pelagos, and possibly others tasked with aiding the tanker's safe passage to a harbor for cargo transfer, likely aiming for Suez. The urgency of the situation is underscored by ongoing environmental concerns and the potential for the vessel's situation to worsen if not addressed promptly. The collaborative effort between public and private entities aims to avert an ecological disaster while navigating the complex security landscape of the region. Less than a day after announcing the start of a rescue operation to tow the burning tanker Sounion (IMO: 9312145) in the Red Sea, the European Union Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) said the tugs responsible for the rescue operation had been withdrawn due to safety concerns, and that it was now exploring “alternative solutions”. solutions”. Operation Aspides, the European Union naval force that provided security for the rescue operation by escorting the ship in the Red Sea, said in a post on social media that it was considering other ways to prevent a crude oil spill and an environmental disaster. Operation Aspides said on X, “The company in charge of the rescue operation has concluded that the conditions are not met to carry out the towing operation and that it is unsafe to proceed. Alternative solutions are being explored.” Operation Aspides did not identify the rescue company or vessel involved in the operation. The 15,000-horsepower Gladiator (built in 1977) and the 5,150-horsepower Hercules (built in 2009) are believed to be involved. The Houthis attacked the Sounion with missiles on August 21, damaging the ship and setting it on fire. The UK Maritime Trade Operations Office (UKMTO) previously reported that the tanker's entire crew of 25 had been successfully rescued by an EU warship. After the crew abandoned the ship, the Houthis sent fighter jets to board the ship and detonated explosives on the deck. There were conflicting accounts of whether the crude oil carried by the tanker had begun to leak. Contrary to previous reports by U.S. Pentagon officials and Greek authorities, Operation Aspides has stated that there is no apparent oil leakage from the Sounion, which was carrying nearly 1 million barrels of Iraqi crude oil. However, the risk of an oil spill remained “high” and the Sounion was moored in place, but several “open fires” could still be seen burning on the deck.
