The Shetland Shellfish Management Organisation (SSMO) Shetland inshore brown crab and scallop fishery demonstrates how it’s possible to fish sustainably while protecting sensitive seabed habitats at the same time. To try and ensure that their boats don’t damage the vulnerable local habitats, that are home to species like horse mussels and maerl (a delicate seaweed), the fishery constantly reviews which areas to avoid. And, vessels over 12 metres are all with Vessel Monitoring Systems, to enable the SSMO to better understand where the vessels are fishing. Thanks to a close collaboration between the fishery and Heriot-Watt University, the marine environment is better protected. Now, you can be assured that these fishermen are landing their catch with care, while avoiding sensitive habitats and species. Seabirds like puffins are an iconic part of England’s coastline. When they thrive, it’s a sign that our marine environment is thriving too. 🌊 That’s why we’re pleased that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs's announcement on the permanent closure of England’s North Sea waters to fishing for sandeel has been based on evidence that Natural England provided. By closing the sandeel fishery, we can protect an important food source for puffins, harbour porpoise and other marine wildlife, and help restore the North Sea foodweb. In turn, this will help make the North Sea more resilient to climate change, commercial fishing and other offshore activities. In addition, our evidence has also led to the government introducing new byelaws to protect 13 Marine Protected Areas from damaging bottom-towed fishing gear. We’ve been working closely with JNCC to provide the Marine Management Organisation with the conservation advice used to draft the new fisheries byelaws that will protect roughly 4,000km2 of sensitive features such as rocky and biogenic reef, an area slightly larger than Suffolk. What is a Marine Protected Area? A Marine Protected Area (MPA) is an area of coastline or ocean this is specifically protected for the benefit of people and nature. These areas help manage part of the marine environment to rebuild fisheries populations, keep marine ecosystems working properly and protect the range of species living there, helping people to benefit from the ocean. MPAs are divided into controlled and restricted zones to allow for both protection and use of resources: https://buff.ly/3VbvBSl 📷 Peter Chadwick

This week the 2nd meeting of the Member States' Joint Special Group on the EU Marine Action Plan was convened in Brussels 🐟🐬 The meeting particularly focused on critical topics such as by-catch of sensitive species, innovative fishing gears, impacts on the seabed, and fisheries measures in Marine Protected Areas in light of recent International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) advice and data collection exercises by the European Commission. We were also joined by a diverse group of stakeholders online who shared their valuable insights on the Action Plan 🌊💙 #MarineProtectedAreas #ICES #EuropeanCommission #BiodiversityStrategyfor2030 #EuActionPlan
