Thomas H. Begay was one of the famous Navajo Code Talkers of WWII, a group of individuals selected by the Marine Corps to combat the fast-evolving landscape of secure transmissions. The #MarineCorps selected 29 men from the Navajo Nation to create a secure way to transmit messages based on the complex, unwritten language of the Navajo. Known as the "Navajo Code Talkers," these men were able to send and receive communication without the fear of it being decoded by enemy forces. Begay was one of these men. Begay shares his story from his roots in the heart of Navajo territory to the front lines of America’s bloodiest battles. Thomas Begay served at the battle of #IwoJima and the #ChosinReservoir, and went on to serve in the Bureau of Indian Affairs as an employment assistance officer, aiding hundreds of Navajos in finding skills and jobs. 📹 Marine Cpl. The Japanese were completely fooled by the Code Talkers.Since the language isn't written down and in libraries, they had no idea what was being said. Tapping in to US com wires proved to be a waste of time. The Navajo and other Code Talkers are the unsung heroes of WW2.

I have long been fascinated by the role of the Navajo code talkers in WWII ... and the success they helped to achieve. The history and implementation of this strategy is amazing to study. What these Marines did - with native communication skills - was exceptional in every regard. It was an absolutely brilliant approach to a very complicated problem. Thinking outside the box.

Just out of curiosity - did they serve in any capacity in the ETO? I know Japanese-Americans served in Italy - just curious if the unique skills of the Navajo were used against the Germans?
