"All ships are vessel but not all vessels are ship" A classic maritime distinction! A Vessel is a broad term that refers to any craft designed for navigation on water, including:- Ships- Boats- Ferries- Tugboats- Barges- Yachts- SubmarinesOn the other hand, a Ship is a specific type of vessel that is:- Designed for ocean voyages or long-distance travel- Typically larger and more complex than other vessels- Equipped with advanced navigation and propulsion systems- Usually has a crew and accommodations for extended periods at seaExamples of vessels that are not ships include:- Fishing boats- Speedboats- Pontoon boats- HouseboatsSo, while all ships are vessels, not all vessels meet the specific criteria to be considered ships.!

A few weeks ago a huge yacht capsized in the Chesapeake Bay. Luckily no one was hurt. We actually went out on our boat and took a couple photos...it was quite the site to see. After reflecting on what I had seen and the fact that August is speeding towards a close (and along with it the "unofficial" end of summer), I was reminded of the phrase "August doldrums." August doldrums is a term that is closely associated with sailing and the fact that there is usually less wind to help along during the month of August. Although that capsized yacht was not impacted by wind directly, it still got me thinking...if we intentionally look for patterns and keep our sites on what lies ahead, we have the opportunity to see what problems may be coming, tack to change course, and possibly, even avert disaster. The really cool thing about small vessels and sailing is that we can take a sense of our environment, and chart a new course, based on the prevailing winds… This is, of course, true in boating and in business. The right mix of recognizing current conditions and an eye towards the future can have a great impact on whether your vessel reaches the desired destination or takes a surprising tip. Entering enclosed spaces aboard yachts during a shipyard refit can be a hazardous task that requires proper training, planning, and safety precautions. These spaces, such as tanks, lockers, and bilges, can pose serious hazards to those who enter them. Despite their small size, these locations can contain dangerous levels of toxic gases — such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrogen sulfide — that can result in asphyxiation and death. It is important to follow established procedures, including the use of proper equipment and ventilation systems, to ensure a safe and successful entry.
