Here’s an interesting case study from one of Harvard Business School free online courses on leadership; Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance Expedition in 1914. The objective was simply to be the first to cross Antarctica / South Pole. This one’s a long story, but I’ll super summarise it. The ship progress was halted by ice for a gruelling 10 months before eventually being encompassed. Sir Shackelton made important decisions; 1. Ensuring the team was motivated throughout the expedition despite challenges 2. Knowing when to shift the objective, from crossing Antarctic to prioritising crew’s survival 3. Ensuring resources were used wisely, sufficient to survive the enduring 10 months (and more till rescue arrived) Sir Shackleton and 5 others left the remote island to find help, and eventually returned after 128 days. He ensured all 28 crew members made it home safely, despite almost 600 days of since the beginning of the expedition. This was an interesting read and definitely lives rent-free in my head. Would I ever be able to lead a team to endure 600 days of turmoil? What would you do to keep your team motivated and driven despite challenges?

Purposeful leadership is the art of considering the state of one's being and soul. It involves intentionally caring for one's inner self and regularly slowing down to check on one's inner being. As part of his navigation school training, my son joined the crew of a sailboat for a 2,800-mile journey from Southern California to the French Polynesian islands. Leadership is like a sailor navigating a sailboat through a treacherous storm. The sailboat captain constantly monitors the weather and the craft’s position, and they adjust their sails and course accordingly. Not doing so would have been disastrous for the vessel and crew.
