During the Career Management class with Irameet Kaur PhD, a key insight that resonated with me was the distinction between long-term and short-term career goals. She emphasized that long-term career goals are shaped by internal factors, such as personal values and aspirations, while short-term goals are influenced by external factors, like industry trends and immediate opportunities. Together, these elements shape the trajectory of our careers.

🚀 What’s your industry placement elevator pitch? 🚀 Imagine the scenario… you’re at an event when you bump into the head of early careers for one of your top employer targets. They ask you what you do. This is your chance to make an impression and start a relationship that might lead to the most amazing industry placements for your students. 🎯 What do you say? 🕵️♂️ Do you play the long-game or try and explain industry placements and T levels all in one go? Would be great to hear people’s thoughts or experiences in this situation. #BridgeToStudents #TLevels #Industryplacements #Elevatorpitch

One of the initiatives I really love at Ocorian is our ExCo Career Stories. In these intimate webinars, each member of our executive committee shares their unique career trajectories—the highs, the lows, and everything in between. Every session brings fresh perspectives and invaluable insights. Our Chief Operating Officer, Carole Murphy is a great example of someone who has experienced a 'squiggly career'. Carole embodies versatility and adaptability, showcasing how diverse experiences can shape a fulfilling career. One key takeaway from her recent session resonated with me - to think 3-5 years ahead when making career decisions. This approach encourages us to evaluate our choices through the lens of long-term goals, asking ourselves which option will bring us closer to where we envision ourselves in the future. These sessions not only inspire us but also maintain our culture of open dialogue about career development within Ocorian. They remind us that every career path is unique, and sharing our stories can empower others to navigate their own journeys with confidence. #CareerDevelopment #SquigglyCareers #OneOcorian #Leadership #Mentorship #EmployeeEngagement #FutureOfWork

Last week, Florence R. presented “Navigating the Career Lattice: Building Your Path to Success”. She contrasted a common and a fairly modern career development framework. The career ladder refers to the proverbial corporate ladder. In this framework, career progression occurs in a series of progressively higher positions of increasing responsibility. It typically infers “climbing” your organizational chart. An alternate career development framework is the career lattice. Also known as squiggly careers. This approach promotes seeking career growth opportunities outside your department, company, or industry. It also promotes identifying the competencies and skills to be developed in a future role. Learn more about squiggly careers from Sarah Ellis and Helen Tupper: https://lnkd.in/gxpSay3B How has navigating these career frameworks impacted your career?
