The world’s greatest lie: the myth of the solo founder disrupting an industry: It’s been 3 years and 11 months since we started Tracecost. Feels like yesterday when it was just me and my cofounders with nothing but a dream. Back then, Tracecost started with just one module: a data tracking dashboard. As the team grew, so did our product. Just last week, something dawned on me: How big we’ve grown today and how the culture from the very early days still exists: my team’s in at 8 AM, working till 5 PM. Some of them would go to an event next and be back by 7:30 PM. At times, I’d even see messages at 12 in the night. Without any of this, we couldn’t be in: — 14 countries. — with 585+ clients. — and 16700 users… …. in such a short period of time. I share this for one reason: Through the years, as cofounders, we naturally get most of the praise. But what’s lost behind the headlines, and the big hairy milestones, is…. ….. how it’s not just me, or my cofounders, it’s the team. Because the team you build is the company you build. “There was a grieving process that I needed to go through, and part of that was my identity.” This was a bit of a tough one to talk about. Exiting a startup can be painted as the pinnacle moment all founders work towards - walking away with the rewards of what you built. Yet in reality, it's far more complex. I had a candid conversation with Kai at Sifted about my experience exiting the startup I co-founded with Giulia Piu . I opened up about the rollercoaster of emotions, feelings of grief and loss, and even the identity crisis that can come when handing over your "baby" after pouring so much of yourself into building it. Celebrating fake wins is poison for a startup. What do I mean? • Fundraising announcements • Adding new employees • Fluffy partnerships • Press coverage When you celebrate fake victories, you care about optics: • How much money did we raise? • Did we get featured in Tech Crunch? • How many employees are on the team? It's a distraction. But even worse, your team believes these fake victories are the priority. Instead of what matters: • Did we hit a revenue milestone? • Did we ship a differentiated product? • How many delighted customers do we have? This is all that matters. Not a fundraise announcement or headcount number.
