How many military service members have an "I love me binder"? When you transition out of the military, you should have an "I love me TRANSITION binder" as well. What should go in your transition binder? Here's a quick list to get you started: 🐿 A copy of your discharge/separation/retirement orders 🐿 Your DD-214 once you get it 🐿 Print out of your medical and VA appointments 🐿 A copy of your CORPORATE resume and/or copy of your Federal Resume 🐿 A copy of your Security Clearance Eligibility Memo from your SSO/FSO 🐿 A copy of the check-out sheet for your duty station 🐿 Extra blank sheets of paper to jot down quick notes at appointments or during your transition assistance class 🐿 Recent letters of recommendations from supervisors in case you need them for future jobs 🐿 A mini planner or calendar sheets to help you keep organized 🐿 Print outs of any skillbridge programs or certification classes you've enrolled in 🐿 Anything else that is relevant to YOU and your transition Those of you who are going through your transition, or who have already transitioned out of the military, what else would you add to this list? Maloney out! ✌ #militarytransition #transitioningservicemembers #womenveterans #secretsquirrels #militarytransitiontips

Thank you to everyone who’s contributed to this discussion! I appreciate you sharing tips and your own transition stories. This is how we help each other out. The military to civilian transition can be very stressful, so the more you prepare, the smoother it will be. We all experience some sort of transition anxiety and/or stress because we don’t know what we don’t know and everyone’s circumstances also play a role on how well individuals will transition. #veteranshelpingveterans

I have a couple binders, Marisol Maloney. I use plastic document holders to stuff everything in. Tabs/dividers can be handy too. Recently, I’ve added my DFAS Retired and Annuity Pay Letter and Pay Summary. I’ll add important VA letters as they arrive. Being retired overseas, it helps to also keep my updated TRICARE status letter, a means of readily providing my right to live/work in the UK, and my National Insurance Number (UK version of SSN, required to work). Another good piece is a printout of my LinkedIn profile QR code for quick sharing (tucked in the back cover). Thanks for pushing this great idea forward!

This is absolutely golden! I have a transition file for my husband on my computer along with copies on our flash drive. I have just recently moved things to a binder and incorporated “transition goals” that way he can see the progress he has made even if it doesn’t feel like it.

DBQs for everything that you are claiming and a big star on your calendar for the 180 day point when you need to file your BDD claim with the VA. And start going to the doctor every week. Complain about every single thing that we just rubbed some dirt on over the last 20 years. Get the diagnosis in your military treatment record and know how to accurately and honestly describe your symptoms using the language that will actually get you compensated fairly.

Just dropping some hints to those recently separated. You can download your “blue button” off of Tricare . It has diagnostic codes and diagnosis, even dates. This is incredibly helpful.

In my husband's, we keep everything noted plus his most up to date VA info, CDs to his medical records, LES from the last year, letters regarding his GI Bill, school transcripts, and pretty much copies of anything he receives from Army, VA or Tricare. We also keep it all on a Google drive for easy access.
