I am very proud to announce that our new flagship degree programme, "Sustainable Materials Engineering", has recently become official at a bachelor’s and master’s degree level. Prospective students will be able to study this programme at RWTH Aachen University starting next winter semester 2024/25 in the Bachelor's and in the following summer semester 2025 in the Master's degree. What began as a student proposal and a modernisation attempt ultimately became market-ready over the course of the last two years, numerous meetings with the professors and a great deal of constructive work in the background, and is now replacing our previous "Materials Engineering" degree programme in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. --- What's new? Our aim was to develop a modern and studyable degree programme that promotes contemporary teaching concepts and, for the first time, places a dedicated focus on sustainability-related topics such as carbon-neutral circular metallurgy and data-driven materials design. In the Bachelor's programme, we have created space for interdisciplinary elective specialisations that enable students to deepen their respective interests at an early stage and focus on the topics that inspire them. Additionally, we incorporated increasingly important topics such as the handling of large amounts of data and the simulation of (cyclical) processes into fixed courses. The consecutive Master's programme promises maximum degrees of freedom! We now offer a degree programme in which students are completely free to choose their own profile. This includes a newly enabled mobility window in the third semester, which allows students to gain experience abroad, complete an industrial or research internship, or deepen their knowledge according to their personal interests. --- A project like this is only possible with a strong team and I would like to thank my colleagues Silas Ritz, Richard Rosner, Peter Niclas Herrmann, Thorge Künkel and Ole Krüger from the Fachschaft Materialwissenschaft und Werkstofftechnik, with whom I was able to promote this project. Special thanks go to Sebastian Münstermann, who intensively supervised this project on behalf of our professors and guided it through the university's academic committees, as well as Marion Kalde who accompanied the comprehensive administrative processes! I’m looking forward to seeing how our project proves itself in practice. ✨ National Engineering Day 2024: Engineering an Inclusive Future ✨ Today, we celebrate engineers who shape our world and inspire future generations. Did you know that only 15.7% of the UK’s engineering workforce are women and 11.4% are from minority ethnic backgrounds, there’s a clear need for more young people to see themselves in engineering. This year’s theme, Who do you look up to?, is all about recognising role models who inspire the next generation. Today, The Royal Academy of Engineering is unveiling art installations created by Kelly Anna, showcasing engineers as diverse role models. Nominated by the Academy network, 80 individuals were put forward, with the final figures selected by a panel and featured in stunning installations, including a larger-than-life sculpture, celebrating their contributions to diversity and innovation. We were absolutely thrilled to have had the Royal Academy of Engineering as a partner at Advanced Engineering 2024, where they truly showcased the inspiring power of engineering. It was a privilege to welcome students and apprentices who were eager to connect with industry professionals and gain valuable insights. Events like this give young people a chance to meet real-world role models and see first-hand the incredible opportunities that await them in the industry. Let’s keep inspiring the next generation to bring their unique talents to this dynamic field and help shape a better, more inclusive future. 🌍💡 Find out more about the Royal Academy of Engineering and #NationalEngineeringDay 👉 https://bit.ly/3YPrkEu #EngineeringForAll #AEUK25 #STEM #ukmfg #EngineeringRoleModels

This #FrameworkFriday, we’re showcasing Engineering for One Planet (EOP) Signatory Elisabeth Smela, who teaches Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland. University of Maryland - A. James Clark School of Engineering was one of five EOP Pilot Program grantees providing an early test case to see how colleges could take different approaches to integrating sustainability into their engineering programs. UMD took two key approaches: ✅ Integrating Environmentally and Socially Responsible Engineering (ESRE) content in a cohesive way into multiple required courses for all engineering freshmen and sophomores ✅ Leveraging existing university sustainability commitments, expertise, and other resources — including UMD’s Women in Engineering program (WIE), Center for Environmental Science, and College Park Scholars Science, Technology, and Society (STS) living-learning program UMD also created a central website to provide visibility into all ESRE activities to explore their efforts across engineering departments and other disciplines and organizations across their campus.
