Just few weeks ago I returned to Denmark from my last international project, this time in Manila (Philippines). Along with wonderful colleagues of different nationalities I was able to collaborate in different construction projects under Procurement & Cost Control Department (Watch Tower BTS). For the biggest project, I´ve been mainly focused in compiling tender docs, preselection, and evaluation of bidders. This time again I could feel what I did for so long in projects around Africa. Besides reviewing each contractor’s submittal package there is this human and physical procedure which I really enjoy and it is to setup visits to the contractors’ offices and projects to evaluate their professionalism and the quality of work, check infrastructure, standards, policies, company philosophy, attitude to workers, workshops, stores, equipment, safety and so forth. Above all, what I liked the most is to gain more in-depth knowledge of the kind of company that you will be legally attached in a binding agreement for the following years. This human aspect of the projects for me is the more crucial and at the same time “the human side” of business. Don’t you agree that in dealing with disagreements, disputes, claims and litigations, we often appeal to the human and reasonable side of things to negotiate them? Most likely, in Western countries this reasoning is not the most strict and professional. But for many cultures not related to the “developed world” they value that to the point of not appealing to anything other than friendship to settle disputes. Beyond my experience, what I´ve been encouraged often working for a such a wonderful Organization is to look for this feeling of potential involvement and business friendship in bidders and add this symbolic checkbox in selecting a contractor ✅ 🤝 .
